Watch out if you have Microsoft auto-updates set...

the latest security update has a mandatory restart, I couldn't get it to quit and lost what I was working on...:warning

MichaelP 02-19-2006 09:29 AM

Txs for the input :)

LittleMack 02-19-2006 09:30 AM

Thank god I was not doing anything when it hit.

That is a really annoying feature. I typically have many tabs open in Firefox (my bookmarks is too full, I can't keep track anymore) so when it crashed, all those pages were gone. Restarting and finding everything again is a real production ...

SGS 02-19-2006 09:41 AM

I thought most did that?

B2BwithJoeD 02-19-2006 09:44 AM

Usually I get a choice to restart now or next time I reboot...

Manowar 02-19-2006 09:50 AM

thx for the headsup

HorseShit 02-19-2006 09:53 AM

What the fuck is so hard about hitting the "restart later" option which buys you about 10 minutes time before it pops up again asking to restart, meanwhile you are saving all of your work getting ready for the reboot.. THAT WAS HARD

minusonebit 02-19-2006 09:57 AM

I always get asked if I want to restart now or restart later. Sometimes though, the only option is to restart now and you cant minimize the dialog box, so that sucks because it stays on top of what you are doing. The other annoying thing is that if you click restart later, it pops up every 10 minutes or so and asks you again and there is no "leave me the hell alone" box you can check.

But I have never installed an update that just shut the system down without any warning at all.

FlyingIguana 02-19-2006 11:52 AM

it asked me if i wanted to restart...

check your settings or something

Ummm, here is a hint: Set the auto update for the time you usually sleep. Make sure you clear your desktop every night (you should anyway, there could be a power failure or whatever). Then if it does an auto reboot after an update, it happens when you don't care anyway.

It was an AUTOMATIC reboot you clueless idiots.

My desktop was rebooted through the night while I was away, and windows update pop ups came up when I logged back into windows.

Or better yet make Windows ask you before it updates itself. Thats how I have it setup. I dont like it when Windows tries to think, bad things normally happen.
