Want a rough estimate on how much your neighbors house is worth? (LINK)

The website causing a bunch of headaches for brokers everywhere. I have a friend who is not happy about it...real estate agents and brokers are up in arms.

http://www.zillow.com

My house did come in at about 20k less than it was recently appraised at but everything else was spot on.

The Hotness 02-18-2006 03:02 PM

i love that site.

Young 02-18-2006 03:07 PM

It's fun checking out my friends and neighbors....fucking lying bastards.

pornguy 02-18-2006 03:12 PM

I like that site, and I can see where it would hurt them.

Great site. I still can't believe how crazy US home prices are nowadays. The bubble is even affecting the Philippines where I currently reside. The crazy real estate prices are pushing many expat Filipinos ("balikbayans") to buy relatively cheaper properties here, thereby pushing local prices up. Not that I'm complaining--it creates local jobs and boosts the economy.

Kimo 02-18-2006 03:26 PM

awesome site, thanks!

Wilbo 02-18-2006 03:48 PM

This site is nowhere near right on any properties I checked. Take the info from this site with a grain of salt.

JoeMeca 02-18-2006 03:50 PM

err my area wasn't listed too bd i guess lol

Well what it does basically is extract the information from public records. And generates it's estimate off the land, rooms, baths etc. of the house.

It's definately a work in progress....but they admit so themselves. It's only going to get more acurate.

wedouglas 02-18-2006 03:55 PM

Haha this site is retarded. Prices are no where close. It has mine valued at half of what it is. The houses around here are selling at about 175K. It has them listed at 75-80K.

xclusive 02-18-2006 04:06 PM

Great site and it's about right here

KRL 02-18-2006 04:17 PM

The site is accurate about half the time.

The other half its way way way off.

Drake 02-18-2006 04:22 PM

If they can make it more accurate, it'd be a nice resource.

European Lee 02-18-2006 04:26 PM

Why not just check with your local authorities tax records?

Its much easier and you get a lot more information too :winkwink:

Regards,

Lee

infecto 02-18-2006 04:27 PM

Wow these numbers are off. Showing $175k for something that is closer to $500k.

woj 02-18-2006 04:35 PM

nice site :thumbsup

EdgeXXX 02-18-2006 04:38 PM

Yeah, it a great concept, but it's a little out of date. Some of my neighbors finished construction on their homes and moved in over a year ago... and that site still shows them as empty lots.

Magixian 02-18-2006 04:43 PM

wow this website is awsome.

never mind.. i read it wrong :)

Peaches 02-18-2006 07:11 PM

I checked that a few days ago and it seems VERY inconsistent. Apparently there are only 2 houses in my entire town and they are worth less than what a 1/2 acre vacant lot sells for.

My last house shows at value of $80K which is what it originally sold for......20 years ago. It's worth 4 times that now.

My brother's house was the same - 1/3 of what he even paid for it 3 years ago.

It seems to pull from tax assesment records and MLS listings, not actual courthouse records on what a house sold for.

profligate 02-18-2006 07:11 PM

tell me about it, half the people here who say they make "bank" wouldn't be able to afford a fucking shack in MA where I live.:1orglaugh want to move to cambridge? how about a 3000 sq ft colonial for 800K:upsidedow

phogirl69 02-18-2006 07:12 PM

All the houses here that are in ghetto cities like Anaheim and Garden Grove are going for 500k, thats unbelievable. I wouldn't even want to live there, their not even nice neighborhoods and going for 500k. That's terrible.

I went to elementary school in Anaheim and it was nothing but wanna be gangsters and cholos (mexican gangsters kiddies) at my school, and in the street where i used to live houses are going for over 500k and thats in the ghetto! And there's lots of crime there too, it's ridiculous to pay half a mil to live in a garbage dump.

aico 02-18-2006 07:21 PM

European Lee said, and I quote, "Why not just check with your local authorities tax records?

Please explain how the fuck that is easier than typing in your address and getting result in about 5 seconds?

phogirl69 02-18-2006 07:29 PM

I looked up the house where my bf grew up and lived in Huntington Beach in O.C is worth 633k, and he keeps telling me how he grew up in the ghetto :1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

He's always saying how the neighborhood is terrible and how its so ghetto, but
633k is a lot for a house in the ghetto.... Now I don't know anymore if it really is ghetto or if he's just crazy...

Morgan 02-18-2006 10:52 PM

here is my neighbors house: http://www.zillow.com/search/Search....60&mode=search

i bought my home 6 months ago for 800k

Exactly. Same here. WAY high on some, WAY low on others.

sickkittens 02-18-2006 10:58 PM

Only has info for one city in the whole state.

bringer 02-18-2006 11:31 PM

too bad it uses your prop tax to figure out your current value. my house and lot are nearly 2x bigger than my neighbors yet mines worth 90k less cause im paying almost nothing in prop taxes

KRL 02-18-2006 11:37 PM

Its real easy to see how off base this site is:

Look at what they value Hugh Hefner's Playboy Mansion at:

http://zillow.com/search/Search.z?ad...24&mode=search

$4 Mil for 5 acres and a huge mansion in Holmby Hills, the highest priced area in LA?

Try 10 times that number. :1orglaugh

CC 02-18-2006 11:38 PM

It appears to be accurate within 20K or so, based on the queries I did for various houses in my area. Pretty cool little tool!!

GatorB 02-18-2006 11:39 PM

This info is wrong. In my town it's basing vaule on what the property tax value is but my county only counts 25% of the home estiamted value towards taxes. So a house worth $100,000 would show up as being only worth $25,000 according to this website. So you have to multiply the answer it gives you by 4. Now I know this but how many others would, seeing the same info? Other places have different rules too. I know in Florida they have a $25K homestead exemption. Is this figured into the vaule this website gives are do I have to add that?

GatorB 02-18-2006 11:51 PM

Also shows maybe 15% of the homes in my area. Most adresses come up as "not found".

Sofa King 02-19-2006 12:20 AM

Pretty dead on the money with my house... and i recently had it appraised.

Slick site, but I agree that its damm near impossible to get it right all of the time. There are more variables in accurate apprasials than just SF, room count and recent nearby sales.

tical 02-19-2006 12:26 AM

nice tool

Because the info you get in 5 seconds IS WRONG :1orglaugh

Pretty accurate for my neighborhood. My neighbor happens to have hers on the market now, I will have to see how much she is asking.

Neighbor across the street wants to tear his down and put up condos. He is in for a rude awakening at the city planners meeting.

axt 02-19-2006 04:29 AM

Nice site,

Manowar 02-19-2006 05:28 AM
