For me... it's a tossup between Richard Pryor and George Carlin.

Carlin is genius, Pryor was funny before black was mainstream and Dane Cook is super average but has all american likeableness. People think he's hilarious, I guess I just dont get him. Jimmy Carr is a good one to check out. Of course Bill Mahr and Dennis Miller are big shots. Sasha Coen (Ali G) doesn't do stand up but is hilarious.

Dane Cook is hysterical.. In terms of modern guys I'd say Mitch Hedburg although a bunch of the guys listed above are great.. My favorite single comedy act was Sinbad: Afros and Bellbottoms.. That I think is the greatest one ever..
