Lavish hotels, silver plated cars, stupid high skyscrapers, and now an indoor ski resort. We can only hope that the oil runs out soon. Unreal.

I think that is pretty cool.

Small note:

Only 10-20% of the income of the Emeriates comes from Oil. They took care of that long ago.

guess you haven´t heard of their newest projects yet hmm:
1) one giant indoor ski resort. they want to host the olympic winter games in 20xx. looks pretty cool, like a giant bubble with a glas roof etc.
2) a new skyscraper which is bigger than the taype-tower.
they taype is something around 500m i think. in dubai they build one that is about 800m!

I doubt the people of Dubai have even seen a snow bank, much less a snow slope.

I recently got a request to set something up in Dubai at the EMIX (Emirates
Internet Exchange) I'm looking forward to go there for this job :thumbsup

There are at least a dozen in The Netherlands. The one in Dubai is owned by
Dutch aswell....actually a lot of the construction and development contracts
are with Dutch companies, the palm island villa project aswell :-)

I can't say it's a waste of money.. IMO the guy is probably one of the smartest in the middle east. He has put his country on the map and has made a tourist attraction out of nothing.

they are trying to upscale their econmy with tourisum . . to replace the lack of oil when it's gone in 20 years . . good plan really . . all the other arab countries will be sitting around in the in sand crying about cartoons and shit like that

I think this is true. Lane, who is from Turkey, pretty much said this is what everyone in Turkey thought of the US. He told me he came to the US was surprised that it was the same as anywhere else - there are both rich and poor, not every one has a big house, and you have to earn your way.

I have never been to Kuwait, but a friend of mine used to go there a couple times a year. He told me that most of the "service staff" are typically caucasian westerners. (think that in Europe and N America, they are typically ethnic minorities)... strange.

That would be palm island it's made up out of a shitload of islands with each
a house on it. The group of islands all together is a palm tree shape. The first
one is finished....they now build a second one 10 times bigger.

Wow, that indoor ski resort is one of the coolest things I've seen. Looks like Dubai is on the list of places to go during our lifetime, for sure.

Not only are they changing the map of the world by 'creating' land to map - they are pushing engineering to greater heights. Becoming creative to bring tourism to a small country is brilliant - having your own millionaires have their 'tourist' attractions on their own land is quite smart too. No need for them to travel & spend their bucks on Switzerland/Austria and other ski resorts when they're fed up of the heat - they have one right at home. Small yes, but don't be surprised if they take that up a few more notches.

I personally think it's smart for their economy & tourism industry.

The real state business worldwide must be in a shock to witness such

I spend a lot of time over there. Not necesarrily for porn though.

Anyway, all I can say is be careful. Although it is definitely the "Vegas" of the muslim world it is still muslim run. It feels like it isn't on the surface since they are not strict at all but you want to take precautions.

So, make sure you have a proxy server. Make sure your money gets deposited in bank in a non muslim country. And don't even think about shooting porn over there.

With that said, I have never seen more Russian prostitutes anywhere else on earth. It is a wild city. Definitely. :thumbsup

There is an indoor ski slope in Milton Keynes, UK. I had my university graduation right next door.

World's largest indoor skiing arena. I was there when they were about 6 months into construction.

Money wasted? Says who. They can spend money on whatever they want ;)

Jumeirah International has the best and most popular hotels there. I stay at the Madinet Jumeirah usually or Emirates Tower.

Dubai has one of THE most forward governments that this world has ever seen.

Local businesses - Tax Free.
Foreign Businesses - Tax Free in the 'Tax Free Zone', for $X per year. If your company is big enough - anything over the cost to be in the TFZ is pure profit. Did you know that Panasonic UAE exists in the TFN - goods come from the manufacturers in China etc, land in Dubai, the price gets raised 30% to retail cost, and that 30% is pure profit. Not a bad deal!

The government also setup 'Internet City' and 'Media City' - which are literally that - cities dedicated to media and internet. If you're a company looking to get setup seriously in tech, you go there, they set you up for free.

Until about 1.5 years ago, if you were foreign (and 80% of the population is) - you couldn't freehold land - you had to rent from the government. Now, in some places / emirates you can freehold - which created another massive $ boom for the government.

The vast wealth of the Sheiks and government comes partly from oil, yes, but a very, very large chucnk of it is from how they setup their country.

Another interesting note - crime rate is 0, or there abouts. It's one of the safest places in the world.

I expected BIG things when I went to Dubai, but was BLOWN AWAY when I got there.
