Anyone else think it's kinda fucked up that when you search for perfectly legal things, the search results sometimes show massive amounts of cp? Now, I don't know what's behind the filenames, but those look bad enough to make me wonder why the hell governments aren't doing more about this.

The other day I saw on tv that for my country, the entire police online anti-cp taskforce consists of just 2 people. WTF?! :mad:

And at the same time, about 100 times as much effort is being put into stopping teens from trading a few mp3s :disgust

Asacp is too busy shutting down tgps that have 18+ thumbs they don't like.

one would think it would be easier for them to track through P2P cos presumably they can trace the video/content back to the originating computer where it's hosted

Franck: Well, the responsibility for stopping this kind of shit doesn't go to asacp, but to the police. And they could do a helluva lot more than they're doing now, that's for sure.

For networks like Kazaa, edonkey, Gnutella, etc. that's true, but they still face the problem of cooperating internationally. For anonymous p2p networks like share, winny, freenet etc. (which send data through other users, so it isn't clear what the originator is) it's a lot harder.

Still, they could be doing loads more than they're doing now.

I was told by a police officer in the internet field that interpol (and possible fbi?) monitors who downloads and what from p2p so they bust them.

I really hope that in the next 5-10 years the authorities shut down those evil CP producers... and leave the money-making porn business to those of us who FOLLOW the rules!

smarten up, who told you these files cannot be traps by the police? Those that will download them more likely already posses cp or even worse.

I'm fairly sure it's not all traps by the police. The tv show I mentioned in the first post also had some pieces on those who got caught, and those had tens or even hundreds of thousands of illegal pictures/videos on their computers. Since I can't imagine the police to first supply people with vast libraries of CP before arresting them, I'm fairly sure they got the files in other ways.

Aside from that, something like Freenet is still considered to provide virtual anonymity - in China, for example, it is rather popular with dissidents.

Furthermore, I find it hard to believe that the police is entirely responsible for spamming p2p networks with contents with such names to such a degree. That would be like the police plastering signs saying "Get your heroine here" all over town.

As a final note, almost always when you hear about cp busts, they mention credit card data, which leads me to believe that the police focus, for a large part, on trap sites.

I'm sure internet traffic is being monitored, and that much is tracked. However, I'm equally sure that right now, not enough is being done to stamp this out.

Honestly, I don't think the cops really care about CP -- if they did, they'd be doing a hell of a lot more about it. They'd rather go after the easy targets -- speeders, tax evaders, and theives. I think this is just about putting on a good public "face" to keep the mainstream world believing that their token efforts are an example of actual work being done!

lot's of it is bait I guess, about a month or so ago I saw on TV how they have like a small special unit where all the cops do is hang out in Yahoo chat rooms pretending to be underaged girls

But, then again, there are thousands or even millions of underage girls on sites like MySpace chatting with older guys :2 cents:
