|
I've been to Mexico City. It's been a while, but we were in the ritzy part of town. Even then we were told not to venture out alone.
I can't remember what the area was called, but it's where the Hard Rock Cafe and El Presidente hotel are located. |
mmm ok...I guess I'll cross my fingers and pay some cabby to drive me around lol :)
thanks guys! :) |
Sam and I can tell you all about our "One Night in Mexico" :1orglaugh
Few years back, we came on vacation to Costa Rica from Montreal. We had like a few hour wait in Mexico City on our return flight home. We were sitting in the bar/restaurant area, conscious of the time. When it was finally our time to head to the gate, we got there and it was empty. Turns out Mexico was not in the same timezone as Costa Rica as we thought, so we missed our connection :disgust We had to stay the night, so we went out on the town and ended up in "Zona Rosa" - The Pink Zone. One EXPENSIVE Mexican dinner later, we ended up at some strip club. We only had a certain amount of cash on us and let's just say we overspent... The management didn't find it very amusing. Sam was "escorted" to the hotel to fetch money from the safe at gunpoint, while they kept me "for insurance". Since I figured Sam might not make it back, I decided to enjoy myself instead of just sitting around. I even got a free drink from the manager. When Sam eventually got back, he freaked at the point I had spent even more money :1orglaugh Lucky enough, he brought a bit extra which allowed us to pay everything off and get kicked out of the club. We had no cash to make it back to the hotel, so we begged some guy and ended up hitchiking. There's a bit more detail to the story, but that sums up our Mexican Adventure :) |
OMG KEITH!!! I don't think I wanna hear anymore!!!
My uncle jsut told me that Mex city is dangerous and I should not leave the airport at all cuz I might get kidnapped and held for ransom!! wtf???? :( |
I will seriously advise you don't leave by yourself.
With a friend is cool. |
its going to be a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG 7 hrs at the Airport Odie:winkwink:
|
Stay at the airport. The air quaity is some of the worst in the world. I always hated playing soccer there.

Just stay in the airport and get drunk, that way you'll reach Costa Rica in perfect shape! hehe |
Odie, regardless of your decision, just be informed and be aware http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...o+city&spell=1 With that much time to kill you may be best off securing a hotel room and getting comfortable.

Actually they would just kidnap you and rape you. Columbians are more into the ransom part. |
you need to watch out for the Zeta's, and they will kill. So if you look like a gringo then don't leave the airport.

Mexico City brings back a lot of memories, I spent about three months there doing my military training. We used to go out on the weekends and never had any trouble, but I was never alone, I was always with two of my friends, one of them a local. We rode the bus, cab, micro-bus, metro and people never messed with us. We went to the zona rosa, Zocalo, and other places. I never got ill from the stomach even though I ate a bunch of food from street vendors. The air quality is the worst, but that is not the only reason that it's tough to breathe, but also because it's a high altitude city, you'll notice it if you run and get agitated.
Mexico is a great city and there's something for everyone. It's unbelievably big and you have the chance to run into any kind of person. I would advise you not to venture by yourself, specially if you don't have the "tough guy" look. |

NO its not safe at all
My girl lived there for a year and went to school. They had drivers/body guards where ever they went |
not yet ... im gonna go there in the future :)
TOmud |
mexico is the shit never had a problem there. except for them trying to play stupid and giving me half the change im supposed to get back. you just kindly tell them that i want my fucking money and they'll say "oh oh my mistake!" oh and getting chased around the clubs in cancun for starting a riot because the DJ they promised would be there didn't show up. fuckin' 35 dollars for some good music we didn't recieve and instead of a jack and coke i asked for they served me some lucky and coke. what the fuck is lucky anyway? after 8 drinks i wasn't even buzzed i started thinking maybe they're serving us fucking water LOL...
a nice 20 dollar tip took care of that of course. then he started pouring me double shots of petron. that obviously made me feel much better about the situation. :) can't wait to go back in may! |
best to stay in the airport executive lounge - no risk, clean, safe, and drinks are included in the entry fee

The thing is to go to have the cab called for, then go to a nice hotel downtown, hang at the bar, then have the HOTEL call you a cab, and make sure that it is the right one that you are getting into. NEVER take a cab off the street in Mexico City. (The girls in downtown can be smokin' hot though!):2 cents: |
I've been to Mexico City and when I arrived, I arrived at NIGHT and I didn't have a problem..I took a cab straight out of the airport and went through the city with no problems...If you're there in the daytime, you will have no problem...don't listen to these pussies..
Now the problem is Mexico is boring as fuck..All you can do is shop and go to the plaza..Other than that, you can fuck hookers if you want. (i've done it) but i doubt that you would want to since you're a female. . However I had the best tacos I ever ate in my life in Mexico City....If you get there in the daytime and DON'T leave the airport then you'll be missing out...You can easily get back to the airport because there are cabs everywhere. |
Are you crazy?? LOL How long is your stop over? You should shoot your travel agent for that.

Did you hear me saying anything about her going out at night? And I'm telling odie that if it is in the daytime, she will have no problem. She can easily take a quick daytrip to the Zocalo and walk around there and shop and eat and not be harrassed. We ain't talking about Tijuana here. |

ive been to both. TONS of times, i lived in L.A. . your a guy and a black one at that and your not going to get fucked with. let me quote dave chappelle from a recent appreance on the actors studio - "terrorists dont kidnap blacks guys" and dont throw the racist card at me either,:1orglaugh Not a good idea for a female tourist to be ALONE and in her words "wander around and shop" in MEXICO period. as for tijuana vs mexico city, tijuana is safer because of the major influx of people from san diego ect |
OMG thanks so much for the advice guys... I really appreciate it!! :)
SLY..thank you for your advice esp...:) see you all safely in Costa Rica :) |
No its not safe at all. They've been having a big problem down there with foreigner's safety.
I was at the Mexico airport once, and stupidly wearing an expensive gold watch with a short sleeve shirt and noticed a couple hooligans start following me around. I walked back to the terminal and stood near a Federales Officer that had a machine gun. :1orglaugh Don't take any chances. |
I've been there 3 times and if you're careful you can enjoy a few hours out but I would recommend that you stay on your guard. 7 hours isn't much time and depending on what time you arrive it may not makes sense to travel out at all.
That being said, I remember some excellent food, great shopping and I enjoyed the hand carved woodwork every where. Be prepared, the city smells of the old VW bugs. At least it used to. Whenever I'm in a not so friendly country alone I prefer limos over taxis. The ones that have stands and take credit cards at the airport. Leaving a record of your departure gives them big incentive to get you back safely. You may find that hiring a car for 4 hours is not very expensive and worth the effort. The cops get paid about the same as janitors. They're expected to feed their families through kick backs. Keep most of your money hidden away but some odd number like $22 easily accessible in your wallet. If you need to pay a fine on the spot it will be the exact amount in your wallet. Also, if something makes you feel uneasy, pay attention. If you don't act like a victim then you will be fine. If you don't know what that means then stay at the airport. |
