Should I delete my WoW character?

I had somewhat of an intervention tonight. Went raiding, as I do maybe twice a week... as I realized... what's it for? So much time invested in something that won't bring me anywhere in life, won't give me anything new to learn. Quite the opposite, I know it wastes my life away, and the countless hours spent playing it, I could have used to expand my intellectual horizon, made new friends, worked out, hell... even worked.

People come here asking if they should install the game. I am asking you now, should I remove it, wipe it away, remove it from my life? Help me decide and help me keep sane. :thumbsup

L0stMind 02-13-2006 10:49 PM

Sell it! :)

Personally, I still have my characters. I find, that I need an escape once in a while.

X37375787 02-13-2006 10:50 PM

The character in question is my only one, it's a lvl 60 paladin with 7/8 Lawbringer, and several other MC & BWL epics. Playtime, 55 days. Over 1,300 hours did I spend on this character in the past year. For fuck's sake, that is a lot.

jacked 02-13-2006 10:51 PM

it's definately a time consumer, but if you get your shit done during the day i don't see anything wrong with playin a few hours of WOW in the evening... shit most of us are the computer all day anyway gotta cool down somehow

I can find escape elsewhere, and I actually do prefer it. Selling? Who the fuck would want a paladin? They're the joke of the community, the freakin' laughing stock of Azeroth.

You never played it, so your opinion doesn't count.

I deleted my char 3 months ago and it was the best step in my life :thumbsup

xxxice 02-13-2006 10:54 PM

Take a break for about 10 minutes and then start playing again.

Indeed, I did get most the work done in December when I took a month and a half off. My income has like increased 10 fold in that time :winkwink:

Downtime 02-13-2006 10:55 PM

I say keep it man. I play EQ2, and while I only have time to sit down and play like once a week now, it's still nice to play and get away from work. But yeah, it's like a separate life that will get you nowhere. For example, you can get a job as a tradeskill and blow hours upon hours getting better at it, but then again, you could be working online and making more money lol. That's probably why I just like killing shit on the game, and not working.

It's all about finding a balance, if you delete it all I think you'll regret it. I would, even though I barely play it!

It was actually your post a few weeks ago that gave me the impulse to consider that step. Freedom and cutting loose of the addiction is only a click of a button and 6 D-E-L-E-T-E keys away.

Lets play! The online service got taken over by another company and all works again. Have been playing non stop name over there is AAALogic. Do just have red alert 2 not Yuris?

Mr Pheer 02-13-2006 10:59 PM

Please dont delete it I'd love to have it. I've been playing for over a year and only lvl 35. I'd love to have a lvl 60 even if its a Paladin.

Ask yourself this question: Do you need the time you spend on WoW for something else? Are you still able to accomplish work and make good money?

I did, I couldn't get ANY work done, I was playing it 24/7. My played time was 1680 hrs and if I continued playing it I would probably be dead by now.

If you can still live good and WoW then it's totally no problem, but for me that was not the case so I had to delete it. If it's destroying your life delete it. It will hurt, that's for sure.

WiredGuy 02-13-2006 11:00 PM

I had a friend at the office here who came to mean begging me to break the CD. He was big time addicted.

From my experience as an ex-MMORPG addict:

I've spent 3 years, from late 1999 to 2002 playing Asheron's Call, a very similar online game, perhaps even more addictive than WoW. Even though I've made life-long friends that I keep in touch with even now, I can honestly say that I regret to have wasted that much time in the game.

I do not regret the experience itself, I loved it and still have good memories of it, but I could have accomplished so much more offline.

If you can find balance between the game and other things then more power to ya, but if you find yourself spending 5+ hours a day on it then just delete it and worry about more important things. :thumbsup

Sosa 02-13-2006 11:03 PM

just sell it, uninstall the game.

riddler 02-13-2006 11:04 PM

hahahaha i tired deleting mine but i just got it restored a month later >_<! DAMN FALL BACKS!

SilverTab 02-13-2006 11:04 PM

well WoW is supposed to be entertainment....

if it still entertains you, keep it!..and dont think about what you "couldve done" instead!...else you could say the same about TV or watching a movie..or any other form of entertainment...

wdsguy 02-13-2006 11:05 PM

Whats the point? it satisfies a fantasy part of your life that you can't fulfill in the real world. So it does serve a purpose.

Maybe you have lost time leveling but if you delete it will be even worst, try selling your account or keep it.

Brujah 02-13-2006 11:10 PM

Let someone else play it if you want to keep it for occasional use. Someone else can spend the hours and get the enjoyment out of having such a great character.

With WoW, there is no such thing as an occasional use. That is the problem. The way the game is setup, you start it and you're basically forced to spend at least 3 hours on it, whether it'd be running the same darned instance for the millionth time or waiting in line for the queue.

It's not like a 3d shooter, where you load up a level and play for an hour, save and leave.

Yep, it's basically like a second life. Only big instances like molten core already take like 5-6 hours. Not to mention the time you waste on chatting, traveling, farming, PvP etc.

I satisfy my fantasy part browsing midget cum guzzling paysites, not playing in a role play environment with mages and warlocks. :1orglaugh

He claims to have deleted it all and says it takes 2-3 hours to reinstall with patches and everything. Its bad, he'd play it at the office all day long, lol.

I don't think that I would die if I continued playing, but my health sure had suffered in the past because of it. Fucked up sleeping schedule, added stress (it's not stress relief at all) and just sitting around the PC even more than I already do working online... it adds up.

I think I've made my decision. I know it will hurt, but at this point, I don't care. I'm destined for better things. :thumbsup

I might. Or I might just disenchant all the epics I have, give the remains to the guild bank and delete it.

Any buyers? lol

Okay, good choice if you ask me. The first days are very tough and you might get some flashbacks but eventually your life can only get better with deleting/selling it :thumbsup

fetishblog 02-13-2006 11:36 PM

Shit, keep playing it. My latest thread says that video gaming keeps the brain young. :)

Flashbacks is right, when I had my time off I was literally torn apart, I wanted a fix like a pathetic junky on crack. But after a week, I felt much better.

Sly 02-13-2006 11:43 PM

My roommates girlfriend is really into it. She always played on her brothers account, so over Christmas my roommate gave her a copy. For whatever reason it didn't work on her computer, so she installed it on one of my computers. The night she installed it she sat in front of the computer for 7 hours, the whole night, playing it.

I get really into games myself, totally get sucked in, but 7 hours is crazy. In high school I had a friend who would skip school to play AC and EQ all day. He would seriously spend on average at least 10 hours a day. Yeh, well he dropped out and is now working at a 7/11, haha.

MetaMan 02-13-2006 11:46 PM

I would say delete it, i have never been one for computer games but i know alot of people who are addicted, one of my buddies in high school back when was addicted to UO, there would be spans of a month or 2 where he would not come out and be up until 4am playing the game on school night.

now that's bad, there is so much other shit to be done, i wast enough time on a computer the last thing i need is more time on it.

buddyjuf 02-13-2006 11:47 PM

Ultimately, it is. It's about distractions and learning to face them and remove them from your life. And in turn, become a better business man. :winkwink:

webair 02-14-2006 12:13 AM

if you enjoy it keep it and play occasionally...anything in moderation is out just don't let it control you or effect you negatively.

Pipecrew 02-14-2006 12:18 AM

Hook me up with your user/pass and I will play around with it for a while until you want it back, which will be in 2 or 3 weeks.. I am addicted, just bought the headset haha..

42 undead warrior..

Stamen 02-14-2006 12:19 AM

I used to play MMOG's but you are right, they consume you.

I say delete it and just stick to the games that you can turn off after an hour or two, you'll get a lot more done, and you'll still have that brainless downtime.

NoWhErE 02-14-2006 12:29 AM

Shit, I used to be such a game addict, now I just stay WAY clear of them...

I'd prefer making something out of myself then playing for a few hours, then feel bad... quit for an hour, then get the craving to play for another few hours!

je_rome 02-14-2006 12:41 AM

my brother had the same story... he sold the character. my advice is for you to do the same.
