1000 colones equals aprox $2 US. US dollars are accepted by everyone so you dont really need colones. You will get colones as change though...

If you pay in dollars, you will get raped on the exchange every single time. Suprisingly, ATMs have some of the best exchange rates and its a lot easier than carrying cash and looking for an exchange.

Use the ATMs. Pay in colons.

I used US mainly & didnt have problems with rates etc...I also used colones here & there too.. evened out I guess.

Never been to Costa Rica but everytime I am in South America I just use my card to withdraw the local coin on atms.

The best currency is a pump action shot gun in the right hand at all times.

Failing that most narcotics and stolen gold and silver bullion are accepted.

Very often you will find in most countries that the exchange rate is better with the banks than the businesses. Unless there are money changing houses. and then sometimes you get a good rate.

If you are ever in the UK never use the Beurau De Change on the streets. They are all over London and just arse rape tourists. Always get your money changed in a bank.

I ran across machines like that, in Vegas of all places, they charged on a sliding scale if you used a CC. It would of cost me $50 to withdraw 1K from my Epass, and if you wanted 3k it was 3 1/2 % Fucking Rip..............
