How long do eggs stay fresh in the fridge?

I just decided I want some but they have been in there a month I would estimate.. still ok?

Keep eggs as fresh as possible by storing them in the refrigerator in their original carton as soon as you get home. The carton protects the eggs from absorbing flavors and odors of other foods nearby, especially from strong-smelling foods like onions, cheese or cabbage. Keep raw foods (meats, poultry, and eggs) separate from cooked foods in the refrigerator.

Keep eggs refrigerated at 4hahaha176; C (40 hahaha176; F) or lower at all times.

Keep eggs in the main body of the fridge (not on the door). This will keep them at a more constant, colder temperature.

Keep eggs in their original cartons. This will protect them from taking on any off-odors from any strong-smelling goods in the fridge (eg. onions, strong chesses or meats).

Leftover raw egg whites and yolks should be put in airtight containers and stored in the refrigerator immediately. To prevent yolks from drying up, cover them with a little cold water. Drain the water before using.

Storage Times Refrigerator
Raw whole eggs Use by "Best Before" Date
Raw yolks or whites Use within 2 to 4 days
Hard-cooked eggs in the shell Use within 1 week

HorseShit 02-13-2006 10:47 AM

I didn't even think to look if there was a Best Before date hahaha

justsexxx 02-13-2006 10:49 AM

I buy them fresh from a farmer here. And I normaly keep them 2 weeks in the fridge.

Deej 02-13-2006 10:53 AM

a month is iffy....if your desperate for eggs, just crack and look at them indiviually

100freesexsites 02-13-2006 10:55 AM

2 weeks tops. I know this one!!

Sosa 02-13-2006 10:58 AM

if the date on the carton is after before today I throw em out. I know that is just the sale date but I don't care. Eggs are cheap, go buy another dozen

breaker 02-13-2006 10:59 AM

For weeks.. if you get them fresh from the farmer.

HorseShit 02-13-2006 11:12 AM

ill just chuck them at houses

jawanda 02-13-2006 11:17 AM

do a gfy search, i remember a long interesting thread on this subject. seriously lol...

milkit 02-13-2006 11:28 AM

i stopped buying eggs, bc i always ended throwing them away.

the solution, egg beaters!!

for one, its EASY as shit to pour into a pan and fry up some scrambled eggs, but best of all, it lasts like 2-3 months i think. (pretty sure what i have in the fridge expires like april 15th)

little more expensive, but worth it when you dont throw it away!

Tom_PM 02-13-2006 11:35 AM

Yes there was a long thread on here about eggs before, hehe. I've used month old eggs before. Not dead yet :)

HorseShit 02-13-2006 11:49 AM

holy fuck ASM that was quite the detailed answer.

and why the hell do I only have you on googletalk (which i never open) when you are on icq and aim?

Doctor Dre 02-13-2006 11:53 AM

For a while, just look for the expiration date.

I do not know. Maybe you added me during a day that AIM or ICQ was messing up.
Either way feel free to add me to the others. I keep all three open.

tristan_D 02-13-2006 04:45 PM

I just look at the expiration dat on the box, but I never really counted how long they actually last

Downtime 02-13-2006 04:47 PM

fuck it, i wouldn't risk it. throw em out, buy another carton for a buck or two

abadfish 02-13-2006 04:49 PM

They last longer then the date on the cartoon. I buy the more expensive "organic" eggs that are from uncaged hens and they are fresher then normal eggs... They last way longer.

Wiggles 02-13-2006 04:51 PM

i've went a month, tasted fine still.

LHG 02-13-2006 05:06 PM

Eggs usually don't spoil, but the liquid slowly evaporates through the porousity of the shell.

I buy them in bulk. After a few weeks the air bubble inside grows bigger, which you can see if you boil and peel them. But they are fine to cook and eat.

There is no guarentee that "organic" eggs are any fresher than normal eggs.
Typically I have never seen cage free hen eggs ever in a supermarket either, just at farmers markets and even then they still are basicly caged animals. It would be very damn hard to try to have open range chickens laying eggs where ever they desired.

Hollywood Horwitz 02-13-2006 05:13 PM

organic eggs stay fresh longer but i would still say a month is tops!

WME 02-13-2006 05:16 PM

its my girlfriend who does the grocery. when I asked her about this a while ago, she just had to rush to the frige and check the boxes of eggs :1orglaugh

You know what it means without getting into all of that. I'm sure caged means little ass cages just big enough for a chicken where open range is a big ass cage on an entire property.

If you go to Hong Kong you can eat what they call the 100 year old egg. In fact they are duck eggs that have been kept in a cool dark place covered in charcoal and dirt for 3-4 months. The flavor is "rich, pungent and cheese-like." and the color is green with blue bits in it. I recommend you try them if you get the chance although if you see them for sale at Burger King it wont be the same!!

Normal Chicken or hens eggs have a right way up and last longer if stored the right way up. i forget if its pointed side facing down or up ?

Either way it boils down to a chicken having a small little nest that is gets to lay in. I guess if chicken exercise is important to you so you feel better about eating its potential offspring sure I guess I can understand free range chicken eggs.

I will however still claim that organic eggs will not last longer than typical eggs if they are of the same grade. I will go so far as to say that typical eggs will last longer than non assembly line eggs actually. Since the time from laying to refrigeration is longer in non assembly line eggs and that is the key point in egg aging. Quicker to refrigerate the longer they last.
