Lycos used ot do it free and you could reply to the messages.

you always could send text messages for free using a computer. Each cell provider has an email system in place such as if the number is 123-456-7890 you'd email it to [email protected] or whatnot.

just another example of google taking an idea that's been around for a long time and making people go WOW...

You can accomplish pretty much the same thing from any carriers website. And the advantage of a carriers website is that you get to type in anything you want as the "FROM:" field.

t-mobile took off text messages from the website a long time ago.

Exacty. I have been doing it for the last 7 years.

t-mobile in our country offers free sms via email...I use it to be informe about every signup I do...
