Is It Good to Steal Your Neighbours Internet ?
So i live in big condo, and my laptop finds like 5 wireless connections, so i use them
should i keep using someone else connection or setup my own connection and someone else going to use it hahaha is it good idea ? |
no it's bad, I just steal their newspapers
|
If they didn't want you to use it, they would have put tinfoil all over their walls, floor, ceiling...
|
its not stealing, just using it:)

whoever is dumb enough to set up a wireless lan router without a password deserves to be used
|
It's not stealing if they are giving it away. They are probably grass roots community activist philanthropist type hippies seeking "access for all" so they want you to use their communal connection. :thumbsup

If its in my house, I is mine and I use it.
|
i also live in a condo and pick up about 6 other wireless connections that my lappy picks up. only one of them isnt security enabled, makes me wonder why the dude never took the time to set up and secure is own shit.

Exactly what he said!!! |
fuck it, if its open then use it... they didn't setup a password it's their fault
|
If it's available use it ;) It's their fault for not securing it, maybe if they notice their connect bogs down, they'll do something about it :)
|
Stealing is only illegal if you get caught.
|
Use it - then send'em a bill for "beta-testing" their unsecured network for them. :winkwink:
My neighbour's wifi is unsecured, but he's a buddy of mine...so I don't take advantage of it. No use for it since we have two separate IPs here anyways. Our Niagara region is ripe with hotspots everywhere, though. All the major hotels run wifi and its easy to gain access to many of 'em down by the Falls. |
it's not stealing if you are only using the unused bandwidth. it's impossible for 2 people to use the same bandwidth at the same time.

Thank you. |
Generally I think it's stealing, but it also shows the incompetence of the owner (or more the dumbing down of the default "works out of the box" setup)
I personally would be more worried about what YOU are sending through their connection. Anyone in range can sniff out packets, so if you log into any sites that use cookies or HTTP basic authentication they can see your details. |
well if the RF is tresspassing onto my property , that makes it mine to do what i want with
so yep its good to use your neighbours connection |
technically it's illegal, but only one guy (afaik) has ever been arrested for it, and he was sitting on the street in his car in front of the owner's house. I would get your own access point, and secure it with passwords, encryption, and everything else you can. Having your personal info flying around unencrypted and going through another person's connection is just plain dumb.
|
I have a VPN setup (of sorts) which means that technically I could connect to any AP that lets me send packets to my server, and use it as if I was at home. It's SSH encrypted as well.
|
I can hit 4 wireless connections. Mine with the ssid not being brodacasted and only allows the mac add from my laptop and axim. And the other 3 are all called linksys. 3 neighbors set up right out of the box.
|
The only way I see it could be illegal is in the case mentioned above of someone tresspassing to do so or "cracking" a password to gain access. My laptop connected to someone else's unsecure connection once when mine hiccupped and I didn't realize it until I checked to see why my connection was running so slow. Of course in my case if anyone had complained I do have my own connection in the connect menu, you really couldn't use that excuse if you didn't:upsidedow
Wirelesses can be named anything, seems it would be hard to claim someone knew that a connection wasn't an allowed "hot spot". |
It's only good if you're using his bandwith to download porn.
Otherwise you should stop it. |

An people wonder why the feds have a problem with this industry. |
thats what i do i go to hotels and stuff with anntena
|
Maybe not in a strict sense but I guess it's still stealing.
|
Why would you steal, what would the point be? You don't have your own internet connection? Or just want to submit a few extra galleries per day through his connection?
|
use it!!!
|
The only reason you would use it, is like woj said due to the fact you prolly cant afford your own connection...
|
I had mine open for any neighbors to use. I knew that no one would, because where I live, no one has a puter. One day, my neighbor startes telling me, that he knows that I steal my connection. Going on and on about how the military WiFi investigators have talked to him about it.
I forget about it, and then 6 weeks later, I catch him using mine. So I do the nice neighborly thing, and WEP it. He blows his stack, and from 8pm to 1am, is walking around outside yelling that I am stealing HIS connection, and that I cut him off from it. I was standing there laughing in his face, and kept asking him is he forgot his prozac. He moved about 2 weeks later. :( |

|
Do to others as you would have them do to you...
simpy put, golden rule: Don't unto others as you would have others not do unto you |
i say fuck 'em, they'll never know
|
If it's available use it :)
