I've used all of these before. I've always wanted to pay for a service that was reasonably priced and had everything I wanted, but haven't found it yet, so I keep going back to p2p. Nothing compares to emule and edonkey right now for music (just do a search for "discography" and you'll see what I mean). Emusic was a nice cheap service, but it doesn't have a full selection and I eventually ran out of albums I wanted to download. Stupid fuckin itunes uses their own propietary format for the songs you buy. Napster, well... napster was cool when it was free. Bittorrents are OK, but don't really compare to emule.

I actually record my tunes off digital music channels that come with my cable tv service.

The recordings are super clear, and I record them with this cheap ass tool....
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

and then chop em up. The actual recording comes out mixed a little flat, so I throw the songs in the EQ and give them quick mix.

Its alot of work, not as much as you probably think, but the songs are free and I dont have to worry about downloading something fucked up from a p2p client, or etc...

Soulseek is best for non-mainstream music. I usually get an album to get a gist of it and if I really like it then buy it.
