Looking for article management software

I am currently working on a project which intends to make several thousands of scientific articles freely available online (and, possibly, tens of thousands in the future). Now, what I need is software which allows me to manage these articles, lists them both by subject and author, and provides the possibility to create a separate page containing information on each author.

Does anyone know of such software? Since this is a strictly non-profit project, I'm looking for software that is either free or very affordable.

(I realize chances are slim, but it is worth trying.)

Joomla would be a good fit for that.

I am somewhat hesitant to use blogging software as the backend to a huge archive of scientific material. Aside from that, the interface and such aren't really suited for the purpose.

There's a million and one different content management scripts out there, my advice would be to make a list of the features you need, how you want it to work and then get a custom script made.

Either that or spend a lot of time demoing the ones already out there and customise them yourself, which sucks.

Getting a custom script made for this project unfortunately isn't an option. Since it will already cost heaps of money with no chance whatsoever of even making a penny back, investing another few thousand dollars on a custom script is not a possibility.

I know this would sound a weird suggestion, but Gallery2. It can do any mime type, so it could make galleries of docs.
