As anti-drug as I am - years ago the mother of a longtime buddy of mine was a habitual hash-smokin' painter/photographer who's work always blew me away totally.

She'd do very ethereal paintings on canvas when she was smoked up, and then later photograph the paintings through various odd-shaped glass bowls, figurines...anything clear and made of glass she could find (she had a huge collection of glasswear throughout her studio).

The final effect in the photos of the distorted paintings was absolutely astonishing. Her stuff was displayed in galleries throughout Toronto in the 80s and early 90s.

She died sometime in the early 90s from cancer, though.

In her case, the smoke was a tool-of-the-trade - it helped enhance her artistic abilities and take it to new levels.
