server monitoring

Do you guys use any special tools for monitoring your servers ? it sucks when something on your server goes wrong while you are sleeping. I am sure that there are very little hosting companies that will actualy monitor your server 24/7 and fix the downtime right away. In most of the cases your server will stay down until you report the downtime, which sucks.

I know there are some tools that will even send you a sms message if your server is having issues.

I use SERVERS ALIVE! to monitor 5 boxes, and I am very happy with it! :thumbsup

Very configurable -- hell, it sends me an SMS, emails me and my 2 techs, and even ICQs me/us when there is a problem ... it has scheduling, so you can set it to notify different people at different times!

But running the software remotely on your cable modem will give you more false alarms than you care for ... you will want to put the software ON THE PHYSICAL SERVER(s) -- set it on at least 2 of them, and have them ping the others as part of the rules to determine if there is a problem ... if you set it on one machine, and that machine happens to go down, none of your other network is being monitored ... lol

Hope this helps!

If your hosting company does not offer it, we can offer you such service at Maincrew.com. You can set up a procedure for your server which our techs will follow. Maincrew is able to login to restart your services manually if root access is provided, notify you by SMS or call you when there is a problem that requires your immediate attention, or even call your datacenter to solve the problem or reboot. Price is $20/month per server.

But if your server is managed, it should be monitored as well. Don't cheap out on dedicated servers. Or check out vibehosting.com, they offer monitoring with response by default, good people.

good admin companies provide proactive management, they do monitoring of services and server software updates. of course it costs a little more, but pays in the long run
