WTF is a CD Server?

My dad's buddy has a skid for these and brought me one. It's a Legacy UDSS CD Server with Serial # UC9809023B.

What is it for?

It looks kinda like this:

I remember the old BBS's that would have these and throw in a bunch of cds of stuff to download. But in today's day and age of several gb harddrives for cheap, I can't think of any purpose for one of these. seems like a waste of electricity.

Heh now thats old school, these things where the business, used mostly for network installs but also came in handy for serving any type of static file that would not need to change often.

With hard disks being so cheap now, itmakes more sense to just buy a large drive to serve your content.

Just replace those cd drives with dvd drives or hotswap hard drives and your back in style =/

So what is the case, without the CD drives worth? And what can it be used for if I hotswap them with hard drives?
