I thought Chapelle did a pretty good job on Oprah... i don't think he was confused at all, i think for some of the answers, he was thinking about the right way to articulate the answers and give a clear explanation (its not so easy to put into words what he wanted to say), and everything he said makes sense and I agree with.. essentially he plays the race card, he tries poking fun at black people in an effort to break down the social awkwardness and stereotypes of racism and essentially remove the tension thus helping remove racism from society, but somewhere he felt it went over the line, and instead of breaking down and poking fun at those stereotypes, people were laughing too hard... because of that he felt he was promoting those stereotypes and thus increasing racism. he felt executives were pushing him too hard in that direction, and after nasty negotiations, he took a leave to africa to self-reflect. he went into further detail about how the whole craziness thing took over with the media twisting it..
i was curious if he would break down, or do something sentimental, but he never lost his edge. in fact, at certain points, you could tell he was toying with the fact he was on oprah which showed it was the same old dave. i found it all pretty amusing - i hope he gets back to doing the show the way he wants to do it. people throw around this conspiracy theory stuff, and i believe it... i dont think its in his head, but i also dont think its intentional from the networks,, i think racism still exists thru those stereotypes, the networks just care about the viewer base and $$$, and in the end, dave was in a place he didn't want to be in. |
