However, they should not be tried as adults, since trying non-adults as adults defeats the entire point of having separate laws for underage persons. Rather, underage law itself should be made to accomodate atrocious crimes such as these.

In other words, underage law should be extended far enough to harshly punish those who commit crimes like these.

There is one reason and one reason only that we charge kids as adults.. because the punishment for children isnt tough enough.. Somehow a judge is smart enough to decide punsihment , decide guilt or innocence yet he isnt smart enough to figure out a person's maturity ? error , does not compute ..

Although one problem is that judges aren't usually fully free in their sentencing, and maximum sentences for teens often indeed aren't tough enough. However, that should lead to a change of laws, not to arbitrary application of laws.

Thats what i meant.. i really dont understand why we have MAXIMUM sentences anyways.. if a judge is smart enough to figure out guilt or innocence, than im pretty sure he can stop himself from handing out inappropriate sentences...
