phatforums.com seems to be hotlinker heaven
 

Fuck! There's like 4 or 5 hotlinkers using phatforums.com to hotlink my movies. I emailed them and they banned my domain from their servers, but jeez...its like hotlinkers are all over that place.

I suggest you check you stats for anything coming from phatforums.com

what did you expect? its like 800 movie forums that rely purely on the basis of hotlinking movie sites

in fact, that's all you have to do. like i've said before, our movie files are being hotlinking by several THOUSAND separate domains at anyone time.

the solution is easy - we go after and shut down the top several hundred hotlinkers (ranked by referrer). the rest, are under the radar, and not worth the effort.

it pisses me off, but is actually pretty easy to keep under control. i've been going thru my weekly leech killing routine for years now. kind of fun to shut down all the cheating accounts too ;)

quiet, if its feasable, just use an html redirect on a 1 or 2 movies.... that throws the hotlinkers off :)

send them to popup hell or a sponsorship program, I love when forums hotlink my shit, They sometimes send something like 25k + a day of people trying to download your movie.... if you send them to a per click, you just got a very nice chunk of change :)

I can't use html redirects, I post movie galleries...if I did that I would get banned by TGPs

If it's a forum, people hotlink on forums all the time. You're not going to get many forums shut down. That's why you need to use .htaccess.

People hotlink from the GFY forum all the time, right?

If you run a high traffic forum, the best you can do is remove posts when people complain.

not really feasible for us, except in very limited situations. in the past, we've also used a script to rotate file names, and send all 404's to popup hell. but for a variety of reasons, we can only use this in limited situations as well.
