where do you think is the best place to start a blog?

It doesn't take any special host, any host will do, all that it requires is a mysql database (usually) and php/perl to function. Most hosts today offer that.

Free hosting is a waste of time, get a good URL and pay for some hosting. Use wordpress it rocks and there is a huge community at wordpress.org if you need help. :2 cents:

Why are they worthless, is it an SEO issue because of the domain name?

free hosting: crap.
paid hosting: you control what happens, you can install whatever you want, do whatever you want, modify whatever you want. You don't have to worry that the free host will change some rule or shut down your account or steal your traffic.

i would start one on the internet

They can be usefull for feeder traffic as you can literally get hundreds up and running with out much effort. For your main blog however I agree 100% you should host it yourself and let the satelite freehosted blogs feed it.
