56k modems

I just got back from vacation in South Africa and attempted to work on a 56k modem out there. I now have full respect for all my members on 56k modems, how they jerk off to a site is beyond me. When you download a video there is a good chance the connection will cut out in mid download, if you watch a video streamed for 56k its this small grainy screen, it just blows my mind.

I use webmail for my e-mails and the one service could not even open a screen if I hit reply and would keep logging me out if I tried to do anything in it. Frustrating as hell but it gave me an inside look on what needs to be done to give customers a better experience that are on a 56k modem.

Anyone else had some great 56k experiences?

I was on 56k at my house until about a year ago.

Then I got a wifi link from my office 10 mile away. I needed a 100' tower tho. Here are some pics. All this for high speed lol

OMG OMG OMG! We need that! We live in an area that doesn't have broadband... the cut off is a mile down the road and we SUFFER terribly with satellite. Where do you buy that tower? Any info would be awesome! That's great.

CrazyWhiteMan 02-01-2006 02:33 PM

I too have a wireless connection but I'm glad I didn't need a tower of that size to get a decent signal. Mine goes about 4-5 air miles I would say.

ka band satellite is much better than the old direcway shit. I use it since I'm out in the middle of bumblefuck, nowhere.

Since I'm in Caledon, its hell to get a fucking permit to put up a tower. I have one stacked up ready for usage, but I can't get a permit. But honestly the ka-band isn't that bad. download speeds are good. I can VPN, I can use RDC and PCAnywhere, so its workable.

looking into that now.. we're using direcway and its awful.. they also have a very strict FAC that makes it very hard to do everything we need to

again it proves some things aren't to be taken for granted, 56k users are a special bunch

that's a shot of my wireless antenna I took a few hours ago.. it was too cold out and the camera is new so I didn't mess with getting the flash to work but you get a general idea.

I contacted an antenna company that specialized in this kind of thing. The cost for everything including WIFI equipment was about $40k. We spent a ton on testing time which may or may not be an issue for you if you are on flat land.

I am in an area (Orangeville, Ontario) with lot's of hills (hence the need for tower)

reynold 02-02-2006 04:23 AM

We used dial-up in our house before. If I remember it right, connection was at 56k or maybe a little lower. After we have upgraded into a faster internet connection, we vowed never to return to 56k.
