any chess players?

i was just playing with my friend...he had a bishop right next to my rook perpendicularly and he said i couldn't kill the bishop with my rook. i thought rooks could kill anything up and down or left and right? the bishop was right to the left of it...

Ray@TastyDollars 01-30-2006 07:12 PM

hmm, well he said it was some weird circumstance where i couldn't take it...i dunno wtf...

and then i also got confused with how the king could take pieces. how can the king kill?

Abithefiend 01-30-2006 07:15 PM

He probably said that so he could cheat and beat ya!
And correct, rooks can take up down left right.

Abithefiend 01-30-2006 07:16 PM

The King can only move one space at a time hence killing whatever is next to him without putting himself in check.

StickyGreen 01-30-2006 07:16 PM

oh i know why now, i think it was because if i moved the rook to take the player it would have left the king vulnerable to be taken.....

I have not played in years, however the king has the abilty of a rook(up down, left right) and the abilty of a Bishop (side ).

can the king kill diagonally?

Abithefiend 01-30-2006 07:20 PM

Yes the king can kill in any direction but only one space at a time. Sounds like it probably was the fact that taking his bishop would have left your king vunerable and in check with one of his other pieces.

If you killed the bishop by moving the rook, resulting in putting your king in a "check" position(queen, bishop for example) then...yes, he is right. But only if that WOULD be a DIRECT result from moving the rook.

Yes.... The king can kill diagonally, vertically and horizontally.
the catch: it can only move one space at a time
sounds like the queen is a stronger piece than the king

I also agree Knights are a very important pieces, but I like the Bishops for the long attack ability that can be easily overlooked by an opponent. The Queen is good but I mainly use her for a distraction while setting up the attack with other pieces.

I love Chess, but haven't had the chance to play it in ages.
