I'm not sure if the .htaccess is the right for the mass traffic and 100's of domains on the one server

A bit late reply (sorry for posting I know you were looking for feedback from other webmasters ).

One of the major advantages with trafficguardian, is that you can configure just your main server. All of your domains, current and future, will be protected. The single server edition supports up to 250 domains. The hosting edition goes up to 1500 domains.

thanks for your info, didn't find better script yet, so I'll give you a try :)
