How much effect does a bad economy have on this industry?
 

Ok. Here's a good question for ya all. :)

Obviously, we all know about the free porn problem. Surfers don't see any point in paying for porn when unlimited amounts of it is listed on every major site out there.

But I was thinking.. just how much effect would a bad economy, particularly the tech industry, have on this industry? Every other tech sector has gone to hell, so wouldn't it make sense that the adult web industry would take a big hit as well?

Most people started seeing their ratios drop around the beginning of 2001 from what people have told me.. I havn't been in this biz that long. But thats also around the time the economy started going downhill, and fast. Is that just a coincidence?

I've made more since the economy went to crap...

Probably not all but most who complain about ratios dropping are using the same site design, marketing techniques and sponsors that they were 12 months ago. This is why income drops.
This business is based heavily on technology and things move on. If you don't move with them you make less. Economy makes a little difference but you're selling to a very primal human need and the need doesn't go away.

I love the posts that say porn is dying? Do people who post that actually think about what they said? Do they really think people are losing interest in sex?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming it's as easy to make money as it was a few years ago but it's still there to be made and in good quantities - just not easy any more if you do it part time and have an IQ of 50. You actually need to work and work a little smartly to make the $ now.

People are always gonna be horny, whether they're rich or poor.
You might as well ask if sales of food go down when the economy is bad :)

Of course people will always be horny and surf for porn, but if the economy is bad and surfer Bob doesn't have much spare cash, I'm sure he'll stick to surfing a TGP instead of paying $29.99/month, even if he knows the paysite has better stuff..

Sales of food doesn't go down, but people do go to the low-budget stores with "no-name" type brands instead.. :)

So maybe porn's version of "low budget" porn is a TGP instead of a paysite, heheh

Did it ever occur to you that while the economy in your country
is in a low there might be other countries that have a high?

And that when they talk about lows that this on the national
gross product and NOT on each and every sector of the Economy?

The effects of a bad economy on the Adult Net are roughly the same as in Movies and other entertainment & vices. It stays basically flat while other industries go down since people like to forget their high priced sorrows by using cheap and affordable entertainment.

Fortunately for us sex is the #1 source of affordable entertainment on the net. Although I'm sure the grimy strip clubs with the $5 lap dances are doing bang up biz right now too.

Since drugs and alcohol are the next 2 most popular vices I would suppose they come next in the affordable vices catagory but I would have to ask a drug dealer how business is for him right now to be sure.

The rule of thumb is Entertainment is Recession proof :)

Very good, since this economy thing freaks the shit out of a lot
of people they start using dope and booze.... Not to mention
all the boys losing dough on the stockmarket...
