Depositing foreign checks in US
Curious what peoples US banks charge to deposit a check in US dollars drawn on a bank out of the US like Canada? I use Wells Fargo and they charge $5.
Also if your bank permits deposit of such through their ATM, please advise what bank it is. In the US Wells Fargo has a policy of not permitting deposit of such through the ATM. I was unaware of this and have been doing it for years without a problem. Then today they called me and told me I had to stop doing it and deposit them in the bank. |
good question! :)
nobody knows? |

It's been so long but I think that I ended up paying for the check to not get cashed.. |

My bank does not charge a fee, but they do put a hold on the funds for 10 days unlike checks from US banks.

I don't get charged anything here, takes a little longer for the check to clear though :-/

was charged $15 once to cash a check from bank of scotland....also had to wait 7 days for funds to clear

If the Canadian check is in a USD denominated account ... one can usually just deposit it as usual with other checks, etc.
However, if it's in Canadian dollars, one should deposit it separately as a foreign check item requiring collection ... If the check is less than $25 CDN, it's likely not even worth depositing because many banks charge around $10 to $20 USD (the cost can fluctuate) to "collect" the funds. Ron |
no charge from my bank, just takes a good couple weeks to clear.
