Important Question: When buying clips - would you prefer WMV or MPEG?
 

Hi!

Have to re-encode tons of clips and have to make a decision:

should i rather use MPEG, which makes the files 3 times bigger but also compatible to Macintosh or should I use WMV, which would give me the opportunity to have larger screensize at even smaller filesizes?

I think you ought to go for WMV, but this aint a buyer's perspective.

i looked at my shop stats and the percentage of Mac users is below 2% - that's not that much, i think :upsidedow

Personally? Both would be good.

I heard recently that Microsoft was going to stop making the WMV player for Mac, but would license out the technology so that Apple's Quicktime would be able to play the files... they admitted that their software was so shitty that it barely worked.

that would be probably the best - WMV itself is still the best compression technology (at least amongst those that are available for everyone)

as a content buyer and if i had to make a choice i'd get the mpg that way i always have the option of making wmvs out of it later.

Fuck anyone who can't watch WMVs. If they want to stay in 1995 then let them rot there.

It must be just because I use a Mac because for me it is horrible.

Neither. I prefer quicktime as it's easy to export videos to ipod format.

as a content buyer you'd want the best possible quality: mpeg.

Why? He's not talking about the format surfers prefer, he's asking what's best for webmasters.
Webmasters will split/watermark/re-encode/... the vids so MPEG is a much better choice for them.
