How do you deal with an idiot father?
 

I have a father who is a prick to his family, but not his friends. He does nothing but watch tv and bitch at my mother. Sometimes I just want to punch him in the face, but as I dont want to destroy my family.

Any of you ever go through a similar situation?

im not an expert or anything, but i suggest calling him out on it. Catch him on a day where hes in a decent mood, sit him down and say ask him why he treats your mom like he does. ask him why hes cool to his friends but not his family. Dont be aggresive about it, ask him like you would ask a normal question.

Have you asked your mom why she puts up with it? Some people are really happy in fucked up relationships like that though. I always thought that my grandparents HATED each other but when he died, my grandma was devastated and lost without him.

Lets give this dude some serious advice.

I recommend you punch him in the head and establish your dominance over the family. You are making bread right? Help your mom out, support her, and supplant yourself as the dominant male in the house. :)

Try talking about it rationally and respectfully.

If that doesn't work, try silence. Break off the relationship for a while.

Talk it over, make no fight, keep it cool, don't give up to easily
If that's not gonna help and he's really an idiot, move on, find your own place and live! :)

Some women make more money than their spouses and can easily make it on their own and don't need financial assistance from anyone at all. Not all women are dependent on their husbands, some make a lot more than their husbands. Just cause she's a woman doesn't mean she can't make it on her own.

Tell him he should try to make friends with his family, because sometimes he acts like a complete ass.

You can't win with family at times. There are underlying problems that need to be dealt with. Talking about it may help, but it may make it worse. Everyone needs to speak with an objective person as the moderator. Family therapy isn't a horrible thing, and it may just help the entire situation.

I didn't have an unhappy childhood at all but like all families we had our trials and tribulations. In fact though I'd say my childhood was very happy and completely normal, still though In retrospect a family therapist may have not been a bad idea at certain times.

I moved across the country and changed my last name so I could never be tied to him again. But he's also not married to my mother anymore.
