I need some Fiction Recommends!

I read books like WEB Griffin and I love psychopathic mysteries, thrillers, suspense...not big on romance (I get my fantasies filled nicely, thanks)...

Spam me with authors and fiction books, please.

Raven 01-23-2006 02:05 PM

No one's reading these days? Help a girl out. I've got a thirteen hour flight coming up.

LauraLee 01-23-2006 02:20 PM

Hi Raven,
My suggestion is Tim Dorsey. He writes hilarious crime stories that include very colorful characters. I know you didn't mention this genre as your typical read, but i still think you would love his work.

I am constantly awaiting his newest release..

Very well worth the read and if you decide to give him a shot try
Florida Roadkill first- then Hammerhead Ranch Motel.

http://timdorsey.com/

They are laugh out loud funny :)

Raven 01-23-2006 03:10 PM

Hey, LauraLee...damn, I haven't seen you in forever..hope you're well....

I go for authors like this and the one you're suggesting might be similar, so I'll definitely give it a try.

Andrew Vachs who wrote the Burke Series. Very hardboiled and gritty.

Robert Crais - who wrote the Elvis Costello series.

Robert Parker - Wrote the Spenser for Hire series.

Books like this are perfect for long ass boring plane rides.

selena 01-23-2006 03:21 PM

Well, since we are on this genre, I like the Kinsey Millhone books from Sue Grafton.

WebairGerard 01-23-2006 03:30 PM

Hey Raven I recently finished The Demon Plague by Joreid McFate. It was an amazing book. A real page turner. Kind of a cross between Stephen King and Anne Rice's Witching Hour trilogy with some time travel and thriller elements thrown in too! Characters were great and the book flowed from page one.

bhutocracy 01-23-2006 08:54 PM

hmm.. it's not quite what you're after and probably far too Australian.. but I've been reading the Les Norton series about a larrikin underworld bouncer and the shit he gets up to. It starts in the 80's though so theres lots of ocker slang. The other series I've been into is the Tomorrow series by John Marsden. It's not exactly adult reading though.. we were takling about what you'd do if we were invaded in the office and one of my younger employees bought in the first of the series the next day. It's about a bunch of teens that go for a camping trip for a week and when they come back to their places all the dogs and animals are dead and houses are ransacked and basically Australia has been invaded. The lead character shits me to tears but the premise is so interesting I read the 7 books in about a week and a half, then the two books after the initial series.

polle54 01-23-2006 08:55 PM

read non fiction instead.

kristin 01-23-2006 08:59 PM

Have you heard of the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich?

I'm not a romance person either, I like a good Grisham and such ... but this series is just wonderful. It's not romance, but there is the relationship in there, but isn't there in every book?

I couldn't stop reading them and I'm dying for the 12th book to come out!

LittleMack 01-23-2006 09:04 PM

I love the Dirk Pitt series by Clive Cussler

Read them all........although his earlier works were better....don't you agree?

Raven 01-23-2006 10:13 PM

I'll try the Demon Plague, Gerard, although I'm not a huge fan of horror or Stephen King.....I like the idea of time travel, though.....sounds interesting....

bhutocracy.....maybe it is too Australian, but it sounds like something I might like. I can always bug Curious Toy Boy if I hit a spot that is too 'down under'.

Kristen....I have heard of Janet Evanovich....I always thought of her as romance, but what the hell....I'll try it!

Thanks!

Yeah, her other novels are romance and I don't read them, like I said I'm not a fan.

I had finished a book and was in NY and my mother is an avid reader of all --including romance. So, when I needed a book home for the flight, I had #1 of the Plum series and another one that more suited me. But I gave it a shot and started reading it before I left, I couldn't put it down, I grabbed the second one and took that with me instead of the other book! You literally laugh out loud.

Try The Holy Bible, it's probably one of best fictions ever written.

right now I reading 'misquoting jesus' and 'the lost scriptures' very amazing stuff . . . stuff like 'thomas' means 'twin' in aramaic . . . you would think that a guy with a fucking 'well known' twin brother would put a little different slant on rising from the dead wouldn't ya??? and wait until ya read the 'twink' stuff about jesus in the' secret gosples of mark' . . . holy shit!!!

If you can handle the rhyming slang of the early stuff go for it!.. the Tomorrow series is a better read even though it's "young adult".

finished the tomorrow series the other night.. into "the first casualty" by Ben Elton atm.. somewhere in the middle of the 20 odd Norton books and
"weapons of choice" & "designated targets" by John Birmingham are up next.. The titles sound really Clancyish i know.. but this is the guy who wrote "he died with a falafel in his hand" & "dope" so im expecting them to be pretty decent.. some near future military time experiment goes wrong and sends a bunch of hi tech military shit and helicopters back to WW2 and they blow the shit out of the Germans but open themselves up for massive problems with timespace etc.

I'm a big fan of Dean Koontz. You might enjoy his novels as well.

I like anything by James Patterson, Carol Oconnell, and the Mallory series by Nora Roberts. Nora Roberts also does an Eve Dallas series under the pseudonym J.D. Robb.

Tried to edit this, but since GFY has been wacky for me, wasn't able to do so in time. Carol O'Connell writes the Mallory series...not Nora Roberts.

uno 01-24-2006 08:53 AM

any of these books by the author of fight club... in order:

Survivor
Invisible Monsters
Fight Club

I don't remember the authors, but Contortionists Handbook and House of Leaves are GREAT.

Raven 01-24-2006 08:59 AM

bmb.....Black Angel tuned me right up, as do the other John Connelly books. Thanks.

Got it written down, kristin....sounds like a good book for an airplane ride...

aico.....read it. Twice. It was one time too many! :)

bmb....we just saw a documentary about the parting for the Red Sea....and the missed translations...like the Red Sea might be the Reed Sea, which was a marsh. It was very interesting on the Discovery channel.

I like Clancy, bhutocracy....and I'm intrigued by your choices. I am adding them to the list, for sure.

Hi, Mrs. Lenny2 - I never could get into Dean Koontz.....I tried.

jennym.....Thanks for the reminder. I love the Mallory series. What a deliciously sociopathic detective she is..

uno. I saw the movie, Fight Club, but never read the book. On the list. Thanks.

JUSTB 01-24-2006 09:01 AM

If you like dogs I highly recommend a book called Sight Hound. One of my favorite books I read last year http://www.pamhouston.net/sighthound.html

Another one of my favorites I read recently was The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. It's a really neat book. Combination thriller/afterlife mystery.

Also I like Michael Connelly and John Sanford. I wish John Sanford would write faster! http://www.johnsandford.org/

Korban 01-24-2006 09:04 AM

Ruy Murakami: In the Miso Soup

JUSTB 01-24-2006 09:07 AM

Have you read any John Irving? If not, start with A Prayer for Owen Meany.

How are you? :)

I have trouble reading dog books.....Old Yeller did me in years ago...I don't mind humans getting hurt or feeling bad..but, puppies and animals? Just can't stand it. Makes me cry.

I really like Connelly; but, Sandford, who used to be one of my faves, simply doesn't do it for me anymore. I don't remember which 'Prey' book did it..but I found I couldn't read him anymore.

JUSTB 01-24-2006 09:11 AM

Yeah but Sighthound is written from the animal perspective too(2 dogs and a cat) and it's just really neat. Not Old Yellerish lol

Another one I recommend highly is The Kite Runner http://www.khaledhosseini.com/

You got me started now, there are quite a few of us on another board that read prolifically lol

Raven 01-24-2006 09:26 AM

I read John Irving...haven't read him lately.

Mr. Hands...I've not heard of Ruy Murakami. I'll check it out. Thanks.

LOL...yes she is. The Eve Dallas books are similar. I was a little worried about them when I found out they take place in the future....don't like sci-fi books. But the books are not about weird futuristic stuff. The only reason the future comes into it, is they have cooler gadgets.

Me too... the earlier they are the better... Cussler got a little lazy and formulaic after about 10 of them.

Try The Lincoln Lawyer, I just finished it and its one of the best books I have read in a really long time. I guarantee you will enjoy it immensely.

CynthiaB 01-24-2006 11:16 AM

John Sandford's Prey series - wowza - the latest Broken Prey is about a serial killer who seems to have a new pattern every time he kills - great suspense, love the characters - been reading his books since day one

Cyn

Cyn

I like his Kidd series also.

Raven 01-24-2006 11:43 AM

jennym...I don't think I've ever read the Eve Dallas books. Another add to the list.

At the rate I'm going, I'll get no work done in Europe and I won't be able to take any clothes, because my suitcases are packed with books.

MacDaddyPlaya.....The Lincoln Lawyer - Connelly - How did I miss that one? I read Connelly all the time. I love the Bosch series.

26MLR....I agree about Cussler....even the movie, Sahara didn't revive my interest. I stopped reading him a while ago....Love the earlier ones, though.

As I sais, Cyn, Sandford used to be on the top of my list and then I just couldn't read him anymore. The same thing happened with Patterson, who, in my opinion, tapped himself out after Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider....

Mrs. Lenny2. My honey likes Dean Koontz....I figure if I don't try an author, I might miss a great one!

For those who like gritty detective....

Try Andrew Vachs' Burke series. Start with his first one and read them in order. He is gritty.

Grapesoda 01-24-2006 12:07 PM

bmb.....Black Angel tuned me right up, as do the other John Connelly books. Thanks.

** interesting author . . . interesting concepts, the bad men is a great read too . .

bmb....we just saw a documentary about the parting for the Red Sea....and the missed translations...like the Red Sea might be the Reed Sea, which was a marsh. It was very interesting on the Discovery channel.
*****
there are over 57K known mistakes in the scriptures due to deliberate change, translation errors as well as just common mistakes. . . Several of the verses are known to have been added after the fact as well . . . Then it's also pointed out that the gospels of Mathew and Luke are just copies off mark, re -written. Wtf up with that?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/006...books&v=glance

This one is even stranger . . . Has JC doing a twink in the secret gospel of mark, and it turn out 'thomas' the disciple is JC's bro . . Not big deal there. JC had lots of bros and sisters. Big family . . The problem for me is that the Aramaic translation for 'thomas' is 'twin' . . Now when a guy gets crucified and then shows up a few days later at the donut shop of whatever, seems like him having a twin brother would be a real relevant piece on info :)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/019...books&v=glance

Hi, Mrs. Lenny2 - I never could get into Dean Koontz.....I tried.

*** never couldd either except for the face & odd thomas . . .worth looking into . .
