Do you work exclusively on your laptop?

Do you? If so, what is it and do you see any drawbacks? I was thinking to make a 'top my main workhorse of choice, but I can't decide if I am willing to make the switch.

Spider Ninja 01-20-2006 07:37 PM

you tend to lean over too much with a laptop...better posture with a desktop I think

swedguy 01-20-2006 08:04 PM

I do, with an attached keyboard and mouse. I have no problems with it :)

Spider Ninja 01-20-2006 08:05 PM

sounds better ;-)

Mr.Right - Banned For Life 01-20-2006 08:07 PM

I used to, but i have gone back to my pc, there is nothing like a huge screen.

candyflip 01-20-2006 08:07 PM

I can't. The keyboard setup just doesn't work for me for too long.

llporter 01-20-2006 08:09 PM

yes i do but who cares

Veterans Day 01-20-2006 08:13 PM

yes I have been working solely on my dell for the last year

jess_awc 01-20-2006 08:17 PM

I've been working solely on my laptop for a bit over a year and love the convenience of it. Started with an Acer 15.4" - a bit like a desktop replacement, but just switched to a lil Sony Vaio TX650. While at the office, I do use dual monitors though cause I tend to run out of room.

Wouldn't go back to using a desktop though, personally...

psili 01-20-2006 08:17 PM

At the office, for the company I work for, I use the desktop; dual monitor Dell.
At home, if I'm just coding, I use my Asus laptop; enough screen for dual text windows.
At home, if I need to do any design work that really, really needs dual monitors, I use my home desktop; dual monitor Dell.

My wife just got me a 60gb ipod. Before that, I used to take my laptop with me everyday to work, to transfer what I worked on the night before to the desktop at work and the inverse of that. Now, I just carry the ipod around and transfer what I need between whatever computer I need to work on (well, save for the home network between lappy and home desktop).

That's my retarded situation. *shrug*

georgeyw 01-20-2006 08:19 PM

yup work solely on my laptop and remote desktop to my desktop. There's nothing like being able to sit anywhere inside or outside and do work. Especially on beautiful days like today :)

Thomas1007 01-20-2006 08:19 PM

I switch back and forth depends on where I am and what im doing.
I prefer my pc because I hate to slouch and my chair is comfortable.
:2 cents:

Sosa 01-20-2006 08:22 PM

I pretty much do. I take my laptop to my part time computer tech job and work when it is slow there. Desktop pretty much just downloads stuff and plays music.

Spider Ninja 01-20-2006 08:27 PM

laptops are nice since you can throw them in the closet (or the back of your car) and forget about it sometimes ;-)

Cman 01-20-2006 08:27 PM

I can't stand to do any actual work on my laptop. I just use it for email and forums and other stuff that doesn't require a lot of attention to detail.

The biggest issue for me is the keyboard and mouse are kind of a pain in the ass . Of course you could have external everything, but then its not really a laptop anymore, its a pseudo-desktop LOL

I need to have my big fancy computer to do real work.

Spider Ninja 01-20-2006 08:33 PM

did anyone see the screen digitalpoint has in that NYT article about AdSense? That sucker was huge! Like 2 - 3 times as wide as my laptop

JuiceMonkey 01-20-2006 08:41 PM

yeah I do now at home I have a dock with an extra keyboard + mouse and monitor... with surround sound

no point in having two

though my laptop is pretty powerful it's not as light as it could be

psili 01-20-2006 08:47 PM

It's a shame such a savage monitor had to be captured in such a lame setting.

Poor monitor.

I have a nice office set up, but the last month I've been working on the couch on my laptop with the TV on. I'm starting to like the laptop better.

quiet 01-20-2006 09:36 PM

i have a 15.2 inch powerbook that i use exclusively. i used to have a 17 inch powerbook before that, but since i'm not on-line nearly as much, and travel much, much more, i decided to downsize to a 15 incher. no complaints, it's perfect.

Hey bro, long time no speak!

Are you going to get the new MacBook Pro? That is actually the machine that I am looking to make my new main...

Greg MissionD 01-20-2006 11:46 PM

Do it all from a laptop, since i got a widescreen laptop the switch was easy and i have no desire to move back to a pc

The Captain 01-20-2006 11:47 PM

work on the laptop whenever I can get away with it

TheJimmy 01-20-2006 11:52 PM

I did that about 4 years ago when I was living at the beach casa...decided to get all jellish with the laid back vibe, etc...try to get nomadish with the gear, etc...

anways, bought a nice 'desktop replacement' from dell, 4kish monster of the time, anyways, after some work, I seriously got tired of the small monitor (was huge for a laptop at the time), also plugged in a MS natural keyboard and mouse to the setup, but in the end, when you need a box to stay 'cool' as shit and perform, there is no true 'desktop replacement' not that I know of...

although I'm sure that could have changed in the last few years, right now I work off of about 3-4 desktops for diff shit and still use that old laptop for road trips...

:thumbsup

I work mainly from my station pc... but sometimes the laptop too

BigBen 01-21-2006 02:40 PM

I always use my laptop, but it's normally not at a good height so my neck gets sore. Once I get a laptop-like keyboard and a better lcd for my desktop, I'll probably always use that.

bigdog 01-21-2006 02:48 PM

Once you get used to dual screens on a desktop hard to go back to a notebook

uno 01-21-2006 02:52 PM

I remote desktop to my, um, desktop for the hardcore stuff. I can do anything on my laptop with the internal network and be extremely mobile. It's much better than just sitting in the office.
