WASHINGTON - Venezuela is planning a "buying spree" for military equipment that goes beyond the country's legitimate needs, the State Department said Friday.

In recent days, the United States has sought to block proposed sales of military planes and other equipment to Venezuela by Spain and Brazil.

The transactions are part of what "we would consider an outsized military buildup in Venezuela," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

He also noted that the government of President Hugo Chavez has decided to activate its reserves and to create a million-person militia.

On Thursday in Brasilia, Chavez called the U.S. objections to the Brazil deal absurd and said Brazil will try to persuade the United States to allow it. At stake are 20 planes costing $200 million. The deal was worked out with Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA, or Embraer.

The United States has the authority to block the sale because some of the planes' technology is American-made. Embraer President Mauricio Botelho said Friday the company is working on changes that could make the sale acceptable to Washington.

Botelho said the plane would be used to combat drugs and arms trafficking and not "for acts of war."

Last week, Chavez blasted a U.S. attempt to block Spain from selling Venezuela 12 military planes with American parts, calling it proof of Washington's "imperialism."

In response, McCormack said at the time the United States is concerned that the proposed sale "could contribute to destabilization in Latin America."

The United States has made that view clear to the Spanish, Venezuelan and other governments in Latin America," McCormack said.

The proposed Spanish transaction involves armed maritime patrol seacraft and some airplanes.

Whose running the fucking country? Some asshole in an office in the US State Department or the Govt of Venezuela??

I'm sure the govt of Venezuela are capable of deciding the "country's legitimate needs" :winkwink:

Careful there.... comparisons can be revealing :winkwink:

And... can be converted to show the flip side of the coin... like..

"crazy americans... got an increasing deficit to spend money sending metal to Pluto, but can't even collect all the bodies from the rubble in New Orleans or provide basic shelter."

Strange world eh? And it don't just apply to Venezuela or the US...

Barranquilla is in Colombia.

I have spent a lot of time in Venezuela. I had a girlfriend there for a while, lived in Caracas. Been all over the country. Beautiful place once you get outside of Caracas.

I also know that the US military has had a ship sitting off the coast of Venezuela for about 2 years now... The USA fears Hugo Chavez.

I'll have to agree with most of your reply other than "I'm sure the govt of Venezuela are capable of deciding the "country's legitimate needs"
This because Chavez isn't too bright. From a 'man of the people' he's turning out to be greedier than the previous bunches and just as sneeky as Bush in terms of 'propaganda'. His country does not want him in power however he manages to win elections. He's put all his fellow military men in power with him so there won't be a coup or retaliation from military. If truth be told, Venezuela is by far one of the most beautiful and richest countries in terms of natural beauty - you have every season, every climate. The thing the country needs is a brilliant government with people who care - Chavez is working against them - he's letting them starve.

More like they are not interested in others invading them pornguy. :winkwink:

Apparently it's not a million - the plan is 1.5 million and the purported logic is that Venezuela could be under threat of invasion by the US and they are concerned about their "national security". Sounds like a natural reaction for a country that has oil?

In reality... we are talking of Chavez here and although he may have strong representation in Venezuela and has some good elements, he is inclined to talk a lot. :)

The flip side is the guy has had an attempted assassination by the US (in fact, the US was behind deposing the elected govt - so much for democracy in action) - Washington just does not like Hugo or anyone with "leftist" views. Despite that, he does still appear to have a balanced attitude towards the US (and others), but may have a personal problem with Bush and Rumsfeld.

Other countries, including Venezuela's neighbors, don't have problems over Chavez and he may, or may not end up with his 1.5 mill militia, - tho seriously doubt he "actually" intends this level - he'll need to 'rent-a-soldier' from elsewhere - it's the usual bullshit hardball games.

Washington meanwhile continues to do the same hardball playing and moaning about the amount of milk in the coffee with Rumsfeld making statements like ?I can?t imagine why Venezuela needs 100,000 AK-47s. I just hope that, personally hope, that it doesn?t happen? ? etc. Rumsfeld may not be the best source when it comes to either soliders on the ground or estimating arms others may need.

Overall, Chavez ain't a big problem anywhere, - but, like all men irrespective of the nation, - they can get to a level of living in lalaland and eventually causing others severe problems. The other factor is the history of Latin America does have traces of caution built in - they have see both leaders getting out of control and other nations interferring and screwing their countries up, so there may be grounds for playing on the cautious side.

Only my :2 cents: worth, but can't see Venezuela "invading" anyone, even if Chavez had this desire. Venezuela will and does get a level of support from other Latin American countries, but no way are they interested in supporting or being involved in crazy wars.

Mmm.. I don't know the guy, but from the public statements and interviews, yes, agree he may not be too bright :winkwink: He also has this incredible ego which can be an embarassment.

Don't think there is much doubt the majority of the population actually want him in power tho... It is these people who have benefited most from Chavez being where he is and this is blatantly clear for their continued support even now. It may not suit folks (including me) that may have more capitalist views, but I'd never deny anyone, especially those who had nada, their right to be governed by whoever they want.

Totally agree that Venezuela is one of the prime countries, least for lifestyle, on the planet. Hell... I'd actually be there now if it was not for this one man appearing to have a dominating influence in it's management. (I just don't trust one man to do that! :winkwink: )

BTW TopBucksTrixxxia, sadly I can't think of one government in the whole of Latin America that could possibly be described as "brilliant" :winkwink:

Apart from the culture difference, they are very much the same as elsewhere and totally damned corrupt :1orglaugh The other difference is, their corruption is transparent whereas elsewhere there is an attempt to hide and disguise it.

I dunno whether this is supposed to be "good corruption" if it's not hidden, but is one serious pain in the ass. :) Eg... When it reaches a level in a courtroom (actual example) when the judge tells ya he agrees with what you want and adds... "but I want to make it clear I don't want anything for this, but you can invite me for coffee when you have completed the project". Sheesh.. when a judge feels he has to say stuff like that - can you imagine the reality with the others?? :winkwink:

Threads against governments / countries, cultures, "groups" amuse me.
When will you all realize the human race, as a group, is destined to fail miserably.
Only individuals, possibly, will survive.

Whatever I just posted, I apologize for.
It just came out. :(
