There is a whale in the central London part of the Thames

Right at the part that flows by the Houses of Parliment ..apparently is is a pilot whale.

I'm tempted to go into town and have a look.

Whale spotted in central London

The whale was spotted by tourists and boaters
A large whale has been spotted in the River Thames in central London by boaters and sightseers.

The mammal, thought to be a pilot whale which can grow to 20ft, was seen swimming past the Houses of Parliament.

"I saw it blow, it was a spout of water which sparkled in the air," said Tom Howard-Vyne, who works at the London Eye, on the other side of the river.

The whale is believed to have travelled upstream passing the Thames Barrier early on Friday morning.

'Breathing normally'

"It was on this side of Westminster Bridge and 10 minutes ago it was near the House of Commons, " said Mr Howard-Vyne. "It was an amazing sight."

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) sent a lifeboat to check up on the whale's condition.

Liz Sandeman, a medic of the Marine Connection, a whale and dolphin protection charity, accompanied the RNLI to examine the animal.

"It looks quite healthy and quite relaxed," she said. "It's breathing normally and its weight seems good."

She said boats in the river could be a danger to the animal.

"There's also the noise which could affect it - the Thames is extremely busy. The last thing we want to do is stress the animal out.

"Some people think it has lost its way or is not feeling well, but it's very hard to say why it is here."

The pics of tv are amazing and worrying. It nearly hit the bank wall a couple minutes ago and memember of the crowd jumped in and splashed it to make it change its direction. Sadly, it is moving in a direction that gets more and more shallow. It clearly can't dive at the moment. So sad.

I was going to but he is moving away from an area that I can easily get to and I also think the crowds are too big that something dumb might happen.

I love whales. My family used to run comerical trips up to New England to go whale watching so they have been part of my life for decades.

Jensen 01-20-2006 06:51 AM

Shows the water in the Thames is not as polluted as some think.

Doubt if this will end in smiles though.

Sarah_Jayne 01-20-2006 07:07 AM

The Thames is a lot better than it used to be but the visibility for it will still be rather bad.

whales don't need to see anyway.. so don't worry about that.. echolocation should work fine :)

Id like to know how it managed to navigate all the locks from the Thames Estuary to where it is now. I had a boat moored in Bray Marina and the trip to the Houses of Parliament through dozens of locks would take days. Unless they can capture this mammal it will end badly !

DirtyProfits 01-20-2006 09:19 AM

My bet, he wants to get in contact with us and ask for another nuke on the japanese and their whale hunters but us stupid human beings don't get it ;)

MandyBlake 01-20-2006 09:21 AM

oh man that's strange.
must be a sight to see.

Erica_FC 01-20-2006 09:23 AM

Tell Sleezydream to stop playing in the river

Sarah_Jayne 01-20-2006 09:29 AM

It isn't looking good..they are seriously trying to prepare the viewing public for the worst. The UK public are insane about any animal let alone something like this.

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 01-20-2006 09:30 AM

If that whale was in Vegas it would have been comped with a nice suite already. :upsidedow

Bray marina is upstream from parliament, the estuary is, obviously, downstream. There are no locks inbetween. There is the Thames Barrier however, which was presumably in such configuration to allow the whale through.

Whales don't have gills. They breathe air.

Saeun 01-20-2006 11:09 AM

Ewww... it must be suicidal. I once tried to take a shit in the Thames. The shit jumped back out, demanded a shot of penicillin & a hot shower.

Horrible.
