After being hit by a denial of service attack that downed the Million Dollar Homepage site, British student Alex Tew now faces a lawsuit from one of the advertisers on the site.

The winner of the last 1,000 pixels, which sold for US$38,100 on eBay, is threatening to sue because the Web site was offline for six days until Wednesday, the Financial Times reported in its online edition on Thursday.

Eliger Kliger, owner of milliondollarweightloss.com, an online retailer of dieting products, won the auction for the advertising space last week, just before the Million Dollar Homepage succumbed to a denial of service attack.

No legal action has yet been taken, but an attorney for milliondollarweightloss.com told the Financial Times he was preparing to sue over breach of contract and negligence. The main complaint is that the advertisement did not go up immediately after the auction.

The Million Dollar Homepage was launched by Tew, who successfully raised $1 million by selling ad space for $1 per pixel. The site was battling back a DoS onslaught that began last week after an extortion attempt by a cybercriminal.

That sucks.

Anyway milliondollarweightloss.com is getting free promotion from this.

I smell another rat.

The DDOS attack was an inside job to get free media coverage, and I think the sale of the last pixels and the subsequent lawsuit is also a publicity stunt.

It's one thing right after another with this site. Something isn't right here.

EdgeXXX 01-19-2006 08:36 PM

Wonder how long before he registers MillionDollarLegalDefense.com

I think you're giving him too much credit. He got lucky, plain and simple.

EroticySteve 01-19-2006 08:39 PM

People are way too damn litigious. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Most people are reasonable and if the customer has a beef, most likely it can be resolved without the thought of "lawsuit" being brought up.

Lawsuits are childish.

WiredGuy 01-19-2006 08:40 PM

I bet the recipient is just doing this to play the press like Alex Tew played the press for all the publicity behind MDHP. I doubt there'll be any lawsuits for breach of contract or for the resulting downtime.

This was not just a starry-eyed college student with a cute little site. The media coverage needed to make it succeed was planned from the development stages of the site.

He put out press releases when the site first opened. That means it wasn't just pure luck. This whole project has been calculated very well.

brand0n 01-19-2006 09:03 PM

woj 01-19-2006 10:05 PM

yea, I agree it's probably all BS, a news story is coming out every few days, to keep the hype going...
