How many of you are Expatriate ?
An expatriate (in abbreviated form expat) is someone temporarily or permanently in a country and culture other than that of their upbringing and/or legal residence. The word comes from the Latin ex (out of) and patria (country), and is sometimes misspelt as ex-patriot, due to its pronunciation.
I came to Budapest June 1 2004. Since them I have spent 80% of that time here. Only going back to the states a few times for about a total of 4 months. This Expatriate thing is new to me and not sure were I fit in. I'm still paying taxes, have bank accounts and have a home in the states. So really I didn't think I would be called a Ex Pat however according to the above definetion I guess I am :thumbsup |
Hey if there is enough of us maybe we can have a Expatriate Webmaster gathering :thumbsup
|
I started traveling outside of the US when I was 18 ... spent a lot of time in Europe.
Then 1 year in Brazil. Then I moved to Canada for 6 years. Then I spent 2 years traveling around the US and now I live in Asia for 1 year and half. |
Some of us have duel citizenships does that count?
|
I was born in the Philippines but spent 24 years in the US. I've lived in the Philippnes since 2003. I've filed for dual citizenship. I do see myself splitting my time increasingly between the US and PI :)
|
I'm Canadian, living in Japan since Sep. 05
|
I spent most of my life as an "expat", but at the moment Im in the UK again....
As far as laws, regulations and tax etc are concerned - its a bloody nightmare!! The best advise I can offer is to keep your head down.... |
Imma local.. everywhere I go.
|
I'm Born Dutch, have lived so far in: The Netherlands, Venzuela, USA, Spain,
The Netherlands again, Spain again and now I'm back in The Netherlands for a bit does that make me a multiexpatriate? :pimp |

RAM, how're you getting along with the language? Back when I lived in Budapest almost nobody spoke any English at all. Which is really fucking surprising, considering the amount of tourists the city gets.
|
I have been in Spain on and off since 98, taxes and porn legislation in Norway is pretty uncomfortable.
|
I was living 10 days a month in Brazil. So was semi I think. Did it for almost 2 years. This was my last trip for new years.
|
Ram,
I'm living in Budapest as well (in Almassy ter). Been here for the past 6 years shooting content for my own sites. Winter sucks frozen balls, but come the summer. Most of my friends who came here during the warmer months need to see the the chiropractor from turning the head this way and that, trying to catch all those pretty babes walking through Liszt Ferenc ter.....white thongs seen through tight pants!. |
Quote:
You live on Almassy ter....small world. I live on Barcsay ut 11. From my windows I look over Almassy ter. Shit I may have just walked past your place on the way back from the gym. |

Instead of trolling threads why not do something meaningfull with your time ? maybe it has to do with TIME ? if everyone in Japan understands basic english I could leave tomorrow sort of speak, if they only speak Japanese I would need to learn the language first .. . |

It gets kind of humid there, always hot, and it's not as cheap as you think it would be (unless it's for coke or coffee)... but it's a great place to spend 4 - 6 months a year. Cartagena is a very romantic city filled with history. :thumbsup I prefer the small mountain towns but they are WAY to sleepy to live there and the internet shuts off around 9pm in alot of them. :1orglaugh |
I forgot to add... If you can live in Brazil you can live in Colombia. Only difference is the police will fuck with you more in Colombia. Well, that and there are Guerrilla and Para Military groups that would love to kill or kidnap you. But other than that, it's about the same.
|
I'm not an expatriate but I'd love to fly over to Barcelona to meet some of you guys! (When the weather gets better, maybe in March or so...). Lived in Beijing for some time (months) and been to Barca a couple of times. Wish I could travel more, bit it's hard for me to leave my local friends.

Icelandic, living in Barcelona :)

Try not to be such a giant pussy and you'll be fine. The best way to learn the language is immersion. I know it because i've done it. Here's a good trick many Americans already use. When somebody doesn't understand English, speak it louder and slower! You'll do just fine. |
I am ..American living in London.
|
I was born and raised in NYC...now I live in Denver...does that count? :pimp

Read there are some cities with alot of americans and canadians living there, retirees I suppose. |

Sounds like Spain for British people. There are parts of Spain that almost have more British than Spanish people. |
Left my country (France) 6 years ago. Never been there since.
Travelled like 6 o 7 countries during that time. Glad to be a webmaster when i see my friends living 10km from where i left them. |

EasyJet and RyanAir are contributing pretty hard to the coast getting trashed up. Sure, there are british people with manners and money as well, but the vast majority are the tatooed up white trash. |
