Matt Hughes vs. Royce Gracie (UFC)

Just noticed on UFC Live Hughes will defend against the legend Gracie in May on PPV. Looks like another huge fight in 2006 ...

:thumbsup

Gemhdar 01-16-2006 08:48 PM

Yep...

Pretty funny build up too.

Hughes said "Gracie is behind the times"

Gracie said" He built the UFC"

Should be a good fight.

NoWhErE 01-16-2006 09:26 PM

Should be fun to watch... but I'm sad to say, Gracie is a bit too old too reserve big blows like that...

ElConquistador 01-16-2006 09:37 PM

man, Hughes is the hometown boy here, but Gracie has more than paid his dues.
My money and heart are with Hughes, but I think Gracie has my utmost respect.

Gracie is going to flop, just like Tank Abbot did in his comeback. It's the Muhammid Ali sydrome, you were unstoppable in your prime, but now you're just old and retarded.

Niko Bimini 01-16-2006 10:17 PM

When and where?

Better get tickets soon ....
Liddell/Couture sold in the 2nd day and (according to UFC) tickets are being scalped for $9K each ... I presume this price is for the seat between Pamela Anderson and Vince Neil's girlfriend :)

I think he meant May 2nd. The fight was announced as being in May but Dana didn't give the exact day.

xNetworx 01-16-2006 11:31 PM

I met Matt Huges this past weekend. He was very friendly! I wish I had my camera. Matt is a freak.

Thomas1007 01-16-2006 11:35 PM

Lidell/Couture 3 will be damn good.
Im going with the Iceman in that fight.
He Full on connects with Couture its over.
:2 cents:

Vitasoy 01-16-2006 11:36 PM

Royce is past his prime. Hughes should win this convincingly.

1. MMAWeekly.com has learned that Royce Gracie has been seen in Las Vegas today and according to a few Gracie supporters, he is all set to face Matt Hughes in the UFC main event in May. It looks as though the match will take place at the 175 pound weight class in a non-title fight. According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission rules, Gracie will not be able to fight with a gi, a non-title fight would be three five minute rounds, which means Gracie would not be able to institute any special rules like he received in his last fight in K1 because of the Nevada State rules.

It's been a long time since i watched this fight. Royce was the best but I don't know if he can still do his locking style.

what were the special rules in K1 for him? did he win/lose recently at all?

i am not a big follower of MMA but i love the sport.

DirtyRider 01-17-2006 12:47 AM

Royce is too old now, I don't think he is like Randy Couture. But you never know.

Though I tough Royce can handle the power and gnp of Hughs.

Also with the Liddel - Couture fight I'm going for Couture.

Anyone interested in seeing gsp and BJ Penn fight? Thats gonna be awesome, its hard to pick a winner really. I would like to see gsp win, but I think Penn might be to much for him.

Well, they're both right. Gracies are the ones that help set up the UFC with the old owners. But Royce as always been alittle one dimensional as a fighter. In todays MMA it really doesn't matter how good you are at one style, it wont be enough to win with the big boys. The Matt Hughes of today could beat the Royce Gracie of 10yrs ago.

Royce is a really patient fighter, he likes the no time limit matches(one of his 'special' rules). Gives him plenty of time to hold his opponent down and wait for him to make a mistake. With only 3 rounds he wont be able to fight his normal game plan. It'll still be good to see him back in the cage, but I think it'll be an easy win for Matt.

But there are some young Gracies coming up that will probably make a pretty big impact on MMA in a few years.

Niko Bimini 01-17-2006 12:21 PM

Ok I am as excited as anyone about Royce comming back but....................I must admit after watching the annoncment last night he looks pretty old. Which sucks cause it means I am old! :(

The odds are a top athlete in his prime (like Matt is) will win this fight. But i will be fun to wach and see if Royce can do his Spider Monkey routine and score a submition on this younger, stronger opponent.

No matter what happens it will be worth the price!!! :thumbsup

Screaming 01-17-2006 12:24 PM

This is going to be bad ass.
