XM vs Sirius Radio

I got an XM Radio a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty good. Then I got a Sirius radio a week or so ago. My XM hasn't been on much since. I think Sirius Blows XM away. Thoughts?

Unless you're a huge stern fan, XM is clearly better.

What makes you say that? I've got an A/B switch where I switch between the two and Sirius smokes it. The rock is better. Octane whoops up on Ethel. I thought XM's rock was really weak when I first sign up and before I add Sirius. And Sirius is far better in both the number of channels and the quality of the tunes and DJs.

I like my XM radio better but the programming on Sirius rocks the shit out of XM. If XM where a boat, Sirius would be sinking it.

If I had enough cash to make it worth my while, I would definitely buy Sirius stock. It's per share cost is about a forth of XM's. And I agree they will merge at some point.

I never listened to Howard until this week, I've heard much better. But damn Clear Channel is killing radio. Alice Cooper doing his best to save it though!

Brother Bareback 01-15-2006 03:20 PM

if you are into electronic music as much as I am, XM blows sirius away with the amount of dj's

Brother Bareback 01-15-2006 03:29 PM

just to show you how much better XM is, I checked their site and compared it to the XM site to see what is coming up

Sirius had like 7 dj's, all unknown playing typical dance music you would find on any local radio station

XM has about 40 dj's listed as being regulars, some include Frankie Knuckles, Satoshi Tomiie, Noel Sanger, Kerri Chandler, Mark Lewis, Kenny "Dope" Gonzales

people who host dj shows on xm include: Deepsky, D:Fuse, Satoshi Tomiie & Hector Romero, Coldcut & DK and Pete Tong

if you aren't into electronic music and have no clue who those people are, trust me, they are huge producers and dj's

and if you like hip hop, ludacris and SNOOP DOGG now has their own shows on xm

the list goes on and on....XM has a serious (no pun intended) leg up on sirius

but if you like howard stern, sirius is better

DirtyDanza 01-15-2006 03:33 PM

yeah But sirius is has Marky Ramone ( a fucking icon) as well as Jim Bruer, Howard, Tony Hawk, Bam Margera, I personally like the comedy on sirius better than I do XM.. and I like the punk they play on Sirius.. we have both but listen to sirius more and IMO it's better than XM for what I need it for...

aflex 01-15-2006 03:39 PM

sirius for me, havent tried xm

You must be on crack. The stations on Sirius are better.

Sickthing 01-15-2006 10:11 PM

I've got a friend that has XM, she got me started on XM. She likes Sirius more. I kid her all the time, with if you had Sirius you could listen to this station. LOL

I'm not huge into dance, but everyone that's listened to the Sirius dance and the XM dance, they like Sirius better. For one reason, XM has not blended dance of hip hop and electronic while Sirius does. Sirius just has more choices.

Now from what I've seen XM has better specials. I've recorded several XM shows but have not recorded any Sirius shows. I think XM wins out there but for day to day listening, Sirius blows it away. Maybe I'm to dumb to be impressed by the names, I know which music sounds better.

Thing is those Djs are only there for specials. I've not listened to Lud's and Snoops shows yet but I've been meaning too.

I've wondered if the younger crowd might go for XM more than the older crowd and I'm old as dirt for this business. :)

Now XM has a Bob Dylan show coming up, that should be awesome. I'm pretty sure one of them has landed Tom Petty with a regular show. Maybe not. Alice Cooper mentioned on his show that Tom Petty has his own satellite show but I can't find it in the listings. So Alice either got bad information or let the Destroyer out of the bag before he was suppose too. :)

I'm more of a rocker. I like it hard and I like it harder. :) I don't like either of the providers hardest channels though. I like there to be at least some melody to the music. LOL

XM did have some nice New Years shows. But again, day to day, Sirius kicks XM's ass all over the airwaves.

Semi-Retired-Dave 01-15-2006 10:20 PM

This thread shows how many of us have Stocks in Sirius. :thumbsup

Corona 01-16-2006 02:44 AM

I hope one of them buys the other out.

I have got to have Sirius for the NFL but I'm considering getting a XM for MLB.

And thats about all.. :winkwink:

I realize about 50% of GFY has a hardon for this stock that is going nowhere but come on.

I will admit this, I'm probably not your avg. listener...I'm a talk radio guy...I hardly ever listen to music on the radio. So if you're not a big stern fan like myself...then the talk radio on XM is way better. Its not even close. I've had both, i think XM is a lot better :2 cents:

xxxjay 01-16-2006 04:15 AM

XM Blows -- I bought it for the metal chanel...and then the cancel the chanel. Sirus is way better.

flashfire 01-16-2006 04:50 AM

Chose GFY, dont think I would ever pay for radio...maybe if I was a trucker or something but my mp3s are all I need here

Jace 01-16-2006 05:35 AM

I prefer XM personally, but that is just cause their electronic dance music stations blow Sirius away....mainly Thump Funk, one of the breaks shows anywhere

I wish I had stock in Sirius.... it looks undervalued to me! But not true. Stern is the only talk radio I've listened to. I did listen to a little of Artie and someone. Opie? I don't know. It was horrible where cursing like a 12 year old was way too overused.

I find Sirius to be far better than XM and I have the two sitting right beside each other with an AB switch into my computer.

I mentioned the Tom Petty show the other day. It's been made official now and it's on XM. :

Tom Petty's Buried Treasure
Mondays @ 10AM ET
Deep Tracks - XM 40

Each week from his Los Angeles home, Rock-and-Roll Hall-of-Famer Tom Petty takes his place as XM Radio's raconteur and on-air host par excellence.

The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, Heartbreakers ringleader, Traveling Wilbury, and rock legend will pull together a set of little-known musical delights and classic tracks alike ? many vintage, each a treasure.

It is an hour of radio magic woven together with Petty's articulate and passionate take on his first love: the music.

Encore Times:

* Wednesdays @ 8PM ET
* Saturdays @ 4AM ET

I think that's only a matter of time. It makes too much sense unless one of them seeks to be bought by another huge corporation to prevent being bought out. They both have to have huge buy out targets on their back.

But get both man, even though I think Sirius is better they both are too good not to have both. XM had Dylan and Tom Petty. That's reason enough for me but I'm kind of into RnR history.

Sirius had someone on Boombox last night that was fantastic.

Theres a reason XM has twice as many subscribers as sirius.

one word - HOWARD

Pornwolf 01-19-2006 11:05 PM

Sirius's programming was better than XM's even before Howard got there. Stern is just icing on the cake.

SIRI gets my vote also... damn, still stuck at $6 and change

TreasureBucks 01-19-2006 11:29 PM

Hmmm, I'd say that any dude that is with a super model like Beth O is probably not gay. Just a hunch.

EroticySteve 01-20-2006 09:28 AM

Sirius programming is way better.

I'm a fan of Howard but I can't take too much of him. 30 to 60 minutes a day is more than plenty.

Yes there is shows how good marketing can support a product. XM name sounds better than Sirius name and easier to remember. Those TV commercials early on did them a lot of good!

Sickthing 01-29-2006 06:14 PM

I'll probably have to go get on the XM and Sirius boards for this but does anyone know a good way to record XM/Sirius? I've got them connected to the PC already but I need a program that will record automatically at a set time. Anyone have suggestions? I'm having a hard time keeping up with it all. And to you XM lovers, XM clearly rocks with their specials. Though I like Sirius over all, their special shows are much better, well there's more of them worth recording. Wolfman Jack, Tom Petty, Pink and Black Days, Artist Confidential, Snoops show, Ludicrous, and more that I've forgotten. I'm having a hard time keep up with it all. And need to automate it. I have a USB Radio on my notebook that records the Alice Cooper shows. Maybe that's why XM and Sirius don't make a USB or pci card version of their radio....Afraid of abuse from recorders.

Time to write my congressman about keeping their damn nose out of my radio.

kernelpanic 01-29-2006 06:16 PM

Whichever one has Stern

bjjb 01-29-2006 07:04 PM

I got Sirius for the Martha Stewart channel :)

Realwild-Terry 01-29-2006 07:14 PM

Octane 20 , Stern 100 and bubba is all you need to get through the day !

Hey Now !

PMGames 01-29-2006 07:15 PM

I listen to XM....why? Because they were smart enought pre-install it and give me three months free when I bought my hummer (H2).. . . .love Opie and Anthony....

I don't own stock in either one of them to influence my vote.

The only concern I have for Sirius long term is was Howard worth the reported $500 Million at the end of the day.. .(or whatever the total contract amount is/was).....that is a HUGE risk.....too huge if you ask me....

Howard is on the air.....he had what......10 Million listeners......Sirius is excited because they finally hit the 3 million mark (total)....so how many of those people are into classical music, or hip-hop, jazz, etc....that will never ever listen to Howard...let's say he has a 25% penetration of the 3 Million people....that is only 750,000 people (I am sure that 1 in 4 Sirius subscribers don't actually listen to him, but let's keep that over estimate)....man......that is less than 10% of his audience from before. Less than 10%....WOW!

It will be interesting in the long run.....I am just waiting for the 3rd competitor that will slash the pricing on the units, and change the pricing model for the monthly.....just like the mobile and other industries.....at the end of the day there will be more than these first two players.....and someone is gonna come in with a gurrilla marketing plan and put a hurting on their pricing models, etc.....

Think about it...we use to pay a ton of money for mobile phones ten years ago....also paid a ton of money for minutes...there was nothing included or free...everything was "peak" time. lol......times have changed...now have of the mobile phones are given to you in order to get you as a customer, and the prices have come down majorly....Let's hope there are a couple of major corporations that will come in and want to play in this game...it will be good for all of us (unless you own that stock...lol.)

Just my :2 cents:

Realwild-Terry 01-29-2006 07:23 PM

How ya been ICQ me sometime ... I got both cause direct tv has XM for free and Sirius is my Fave . I got it before Howard was on .. But now that he is on it is totally addictive ..The new stern show is way better than before ..Yo have to give it a try sometime ..They had goodfella Henry Hill on the other day and they discovered he got ass raped on Tape .. Was some funny shit ..

KRL 01-29-2006 07:30 PM

I have XM and Sirius. I like XM more. Sirius is great also, but XM has the edge and I get no signal drops with XM, whereas Sirius, without as many land based repeaters, drops under overpasses and stuff. I like the Jazz and electronic music on XM. I like Howard on Sirius. I think Sirius as better love songs and pop music.

Do what I did and just get both! Then you get the best of everything each has to offer.

:thumbsup

I love it. You're perceptions are just the opposite of mine. Not saying who's right, just get a kick out of how both of us see it so differently.

The only place I listen to Sirius is from home. Have not put a Sirius radio in the car yet. But in home I do better with Sirius. I get XM via the repeaters and it drops out more often. Sirius I only get satellite feed. Once I got the antenna positioned well, it's not dropped since, except during thunderstorms. Still don't have either of the antenna's out side yet though. I need to get the extension cord.

I like my XM radio more. I also like XM customer support much better. I'm hacked at Sirius and don't like what they are doing with their rebates. I ordered a radio from them, didn't get the rebate slip when I ordered. I think my computer crashed or something when I tried to print it and I forgot to go back. I asked for a rebate form when the radio came in. They wouldn't provide it. XM has a place on their website for expired rebate forms. That is, it's too late to buy a radio and use the rebate form but not too late to send it in.

Told Sirius I was going to file a complaint with the BBB and they only said the terms of our rebate were clearly stated.... I think they just don't get it. I think someone gets it and knows exactly what they are doing. Make it as hard as possible to get the rebates. I'll get it. :)

I like Sirius programming more but XM is good too. Sirius radios are not as nice dollar for dollar. Sirius customer support is horrible.

xxxjay 02-02-2006 12:21 AM

Even with no Howard Sirius still kicks XM's ass.
