Citibank Closes Accounts Associated with Adult

CHATSWORTH, Calif. - The Chatsworth, California branch of Citibank has recently, proactively closed some of its accounts because they were operated by organizations that Citibank deemed ?not within their target market.?

Kimberly Wilson, founder and CEO of Inpulse TV, told AVN.com that three of her accounts with Citibank - Inpulse Pictures, Inpulse TV and Inpulse Digital - have all been picked to be closed, as of January 9.

Wilson was notified by letter that the accounts she has had with Citibank since 2003 will soon be terminated. When Wilson pressed Citibank to find out why the accounts were being closed, she was reportedly told by the Chatsworth Citibank financial center manager that since Wilson?s companies are associated with the Adult Entertainment Industry (Inpulse TV is an Adult cable network created by women, for women), they were not within Citibank?s target audience, and thus her bank accounts were being terminated.

Wilson said that Citibank employees also alluded to her that Inpulse accounts were not the only ones that the bank would be closing.

?I explained to Citibank that Inpulse is a completely legitimate company run completely by women, and that I?ve had these accounts since 2003,? said Wilson. She plans on taking further action on the matter.

When contacted, Citibank had no comment.

The adult entertainment industry is estimated to employ in excess of 15,000 people in California alone, a huge amount residing in the proverbial epicenter of adult, Chatsworth. That population is largely responsible for generating the 12 billion dollars that the adult entertainment industry has been estimated to net, just in 2005.

It looks like Citibank has its work cut out for them.

yeah citibank sucks, i'm not suprised at all

SmutGiant 01-13-2006 01:53 AM

Citi Corp is the largest asset holder in the world. Closing all merchant accounts accociated with adult will have virtually no impact on their net worth.

citi can suck my dick
I closed my account with them long time ago
i didnt want to support those close
now I know why
I was right again!

Many banks will close your account if they know what you do. If you admit to them you do adult dont' be surprised if they close your account at some point.

My ex business partner made the mistake of mentioning to our ISP that we wanted to upload large amounts of data from (at there datacenter), he mentioned it was adult movies and they said "our directors are catholic, i'll have to confirm with them, he came back & said, sorry we don't want your business bye".

you know, years from now if financial institutions keep doing this, I see someone with a more liberal mind opening up more adult friendly businesses...someone out there will eventually see the financial benefit of the porn world and reap the rewards

That is why we always try and find a credit union, or some place that is non-profit with a more liberal view on the world

this is the bank we are using now, we love it, they love us www.bondcu.com

Dagwolf 01-13-2006 03:48 AM

Fuck them. A $12 billion industry (give or take) should be able to set up its own banking system.

DutchTeenCash 01-13-2006 05:14 AM

Theyll kick your ass yes if they know what youre doing... upfront telling and getting written approval is the best

Doctor Dre 01-13-2006 05:19 AM

I'm not surprised. Banks never gave a rat ass about this industry anways... frozen pizza is more money for them then our industry.

Nydahl 01-13-2006 05:27 AM

AOL probably has more porn on it via the chatrooms, home pages, emails, etc. I wonder if they're going to shut down processing for them too? Or what about DirecTV? If I buy a porno at my hotel can I now not put it on my Citibank card?

The hypocrisy of these companies is incredible.

Has anyone successfully filed a class-action lawsuit in the U.S. regarding merchant account access?

Most people, including local, state, and federal government, use credit cards - it's become for all practical purposes the new defacto-currency ... thus it only seems fair that all legal businesses should have similar access to quality, affordable merchant accounts too.

Bank Of America did this a few years ago. I remember one of the major sponsors paid their affiliates and all the checks bounced because BofA closed the account with no notification.

Oddly enough, I still have a few sponsors who pay me via Bank of America.

G-Rotica 01-13-2006 07:46 AM

I deal with a little bank out of Hills Iowa. They have like 6 branches. They know what I do. They love my money. They want more.
