Wireless problems
 

I restarted one of my laptops the other day and since then it can't find my wireless router. My other computers can find it and connect fine, but just the one can't. When I open the Network connections it says connection unavailable. I installed the Linksys software to see if it could find it, and it does, but it is unable to connect. Any suggestions?

I had this problem with my old laptop, it happened a few times. I had to power cycle the router to fix it.

Could you have lost the WEP (encryption) keys on one or both of the systems (if you had that setup) ?

I have that same router, and in one case, I had to manually forward a port to an attached device to make it work; in my case, a vonage modem. Perhaps some port settings got tweaked.

Can you see your laptop in the router admin page as an attached device at least?

No WEP setup.

You used the Vonage modem (the grey router) or the Vonage thing itself? I have Vonage, but I run my Vonage phone adapter between the router and the phone, so I don't think its that either.

I can't, the laptop can't even find the router or signal at all. It's like I am using the laptop in the middle of the Mojave Desert. I will try resetting the router and see if that fixes it, if not then maybe the LAN card crapped out?

Here's my setup:

Cable -> Comcast cable modem -> Lynksys Router ( computer & vonage plugged into router)

My last part: I mean with your laptop turned on, and the wireless nic card turned on, when you log into your router from a computer directly connected to it, does your laptop show up as an "attached device" ( i think that's the link in the admin screen ) ? If your router can't see the laptop, perhaps you're right about the laptop's nic card dying.

Are you using dhcp or static IP's? Maybe you reset the network settings when you rebooted, seen stranger things happen....

Yup, thats my setup as well. When I logon to my router with the 192.161.1.1 address I don't haave an attached devices link in the admin screen. Do you know what tab its under?

No WEP? Do you have any encryption at all?

I live in a fast growing area, there are a few APs around here but they're all secured. It's only a matter of time before one appears that isn't. :winkwink:

I'm a bad person - I used to use a lynksys, but now i have a netgear (apologies, I'm a work right now and staring at a lynksys router that's near me).

Have you tried the Lynksys "easy connect" (for WinXP)?

Yeah, I used to have it secured, but I reset it and was too lazy to setup encryption. I guess I probably should do that right now.

HAHA, no problem, I must have installed something that fucked it up, because I am going through uninstalling shit that I don't use or know what it is and now all of the sudden it picked the network back up.

At the very least, your GFY login cookie is being floated over the air in clear text...

I guess you check sponsor stats as well, eh? :)
