Today I tripled my position in this stock.
PLAY - PortalPlayer Inc.
I recommended it a few weeks ago in this thread: fucking-around-and-business-discussion/556731-stock-bets-2006-picks.html and even from that point its up about 12-15%. They are a main component and chipmaker for the video ipod, a very solid derivative business to play off of Apple. But here's the best part - at CES last week, they and Microsoft unveiled a new product called "Slide Show" I believe. It's a small display screen thats going to be placed on the outside of laptops, and users will be able to access their email, media files, powerpoint presentations, etc. without having to boot up your PC. I can see something like that built onto every laptop in the future. It serves a real purpose, and users are going to demand it from all the PC makers. Go take a look at their fundamentals. Solid revenue growth, very little debt, 38% ROE, and nice margins for being a chipmaker. I simply can't find anything wrong with their company except that their business is concentrated between Apple and Microsoft, but still, I'd rather have them doing business with those guys than anyone else! Between the Video Ipod market, and this, I predict the market cap of the stock doubling or tripling over the next 18-24 months. Any stock gurus in the house, look this one up and lets hear your thoughts. |

Here's an article about the new "Slide Show" product:
http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/060104/20060104006103.html?.v=1 "The PortalPlayer Preface technology platform enables a second user interface in new notebook computers that seamlessly integrates with a flexible new feature set in Microsoft Windows Vista called Windows SideShow. The combination of these technologies enables notebook computer manufacturers, working with application developers, to introduce a second user interface for notebooks and a set of applications that link to the programs and data stored on the main system. The new interface is "always on," providing immediate access to critical content such as e-mail, contacts and other digital media. The main components of the complete secondary subsystem include an ultra-low-power processor, a second display and user controls that can be installed in various locations, including the notebook cover on the other side of the main display." |
That sounds like the definition of a hot stock in the making. I'll have to see what I can do to get me some of that.

Ameritrade (Canada) and eTrade (Canada) will be your best options. If you want to go for a local brand, TD Waterhouse, although the two mentioned are quite a bit cheaper. |
