Do you wear a seat belt?

Here is why I ask if you wear a seat belt.

I am a fire person trained to deal with emergency first aid such as car accidents.

Yesterday we were out on the Harley for our first ride this spring.
On our way home after a 150 mile ride we came across a car in the ditch.
It had done endos of the highway and thrown the young girl from her car some thirty feet away.

It must have just happened as she still had a pulse.

We worked on her for 20 minutes before the ambulance and rescue team came.

When the ambulance driver saw her he told me to stop that her neck was broken and part of the top of her head was missing.

With my adrenalin running and my only goal to keep her alive till the pro's showed up I didn't notice the top of her head at all.

She died

She was not wearing a seat belt

She left behind a 4 yr old daughter

I am not going to preach however, seat belts are life savers.

:2 cents:

I am a seatbelt fanatic.. Iwear one even in the backseat some times...you never know

Gary 04-09-2002 08:12 AM

I wont go 5 feet in a car without a belt. Doesnt matter front seat or back. Its such an easy way to save your life. You may be a great driver, but not everyone is and if someone hits you at even moderate speed, your going flying without a seat belt.

Hey Blondy, would it still be safe if you were sitting on my lap and we shared a seat belt?

Paparazzi 04-09-2002 08:15 AM

I always use it! Why not?!

pipp 04-09-2002 08:24 AM

I almost always do. But I have this bad habit of forgetting it when I?m in a hurry. Go Figure! :helpme

While that sounds like fun, nope sorry not effictive for life saving.

playa 04-09-2002 08:29 AM

its always been the law where i lived,,,, in time it becomes second nature,,, sometimes i don't realize that i even strapped on the seatbelt,,

Dualcpu 04-09-2002 08:32 AM

Ofcourse I use a seatbelt, also in the backseat.
Although working on the laptop with a seatbelt on isn't very comfortable - safety goes above anything else.

Jakke PNG 04-09-2002 08:35 AM

I don't use a seatbelt.
I used to drive a cab, and in Finland the cab driver is supposed to open the door for the customer and carry his/her bags in etc.. so there's a law, that a professional driver (ie. cab driver) doesn't have to wear a seatbelt. They count on the fact that a professional driver knows how to drive (no dead cabbies because of road accidents so far). Of course I can't trust the other drivers, so they might cause the accident, but it's a bad habit.
I always wear a seatbelt when I drive like over 50 miles or so, when I know I don't have to take it off anytime soon. :)

Blondy 04-09-2002 08:41 AM

Before I started attending accident scenes I wore it 80% of the time . The othe r 20% being those short trips to the market.

Now I wear it always.

I always wear a seatbelt when I'm a passanger with a woman. They REALLY can't drive. I have NEVER seen a woman who could understand the basic rules of driving. :)

I have been on the fire dept for 6 years and every other accident I attended had a male driver.

RobertD 04-09-2002 09:02 AM

Seatbelts go on before the key gets turned. That goes for everyone in the car, front seat or back.

filipes 04-09-2002 09:28 AM

I always use it, because i'm used when i sit into the car I always put them on :thumbsup . Sometimes i put them on when i'm only moving my car out of garage..... :)

Uncle Vinny 04-09-2002 09:31 AM

Yes..it's the law here.
:thumbsup

Lev 04-09-2002 09:40 AM

I wear it only when there is a trash police car behind me.

Gemini 04-09-2002 09:51 AM

Always do. Besides the fact that the cops are realllly cracking down on it, the old man won't leave the drive until I put it on. And if I take off alone he can see thru the security cameras if I put it on or not as well. And he hits my pager before I'm a half mile with get the belt on dummy. lol

TGF, I'd love to still have my old Z28. I could put the fear of Gawd in ya as well! lmbo :Graucho :1orglaugh

Thumbelina 04-09-2002 09:59 AM

First thing on 1. seatbelt

It makes me feel safe and secure.......hmmmmmmm :Graucho

Juicy D. Links 04-09-2002 10:01 AM

Last time i didnt wear a seatbelt my face got intriduced to the windshield, I barley lived evr since that i wear it

Kat - Fast 04-09-2002 10:04 AM

T.E.Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) stated that if every car had a steel spike sticking out of the centre of the steering column then there would be no more accidents.
Seat belts, side impact protection bars, ABS, airbags etc lead to safety compensation ie - the safer you feel the greater risk you will take until you feel you have reached 'your limit'. Ban the lot and get those spikes fitted.

(my spelling is atrocious)

Then why is it that insurance rates are LOWER for women than they are men, here in the US??????

Maybe you need to take a ride with a REAL woman.

The thing is about seatbelts is that if you are not happy with your personality then don't wear them. And if you get into a car accident your head hits the windshield, you damage the frontal lobe of your brain, which contains your personality traits. So you can go from being a nice guy and turn into a total asshole.

Kimmykim 04-09-2002 01:51 PM

Depends on what kind of car it is.

Warphead 04-09-2002 02:10 PM

Damn Blondy, ridin' hawgs and savin' lives - you rock!

Caroline 04-09-2002 02:10 PM

my car makes me. it starts making this annoying noise if i dont put it on right away. but then it stops. if i still dont, it goes off again, but louder and for a longer time. so i kinda have to. plus it looks cool.

Machine 04-09-2002 02:18 PM

Seatbelts and the fact that they are optional is just natures way of weeding out the stupid.

The Stupid usually leave their hair and skin all over the windshield.

heheheh.. well it's law here so theres no two ways about it..

Juge 04-09-2002 06:34 PM

I always wear one.

Air bags are nice to have, too. I have a friend who hit a car going 120 on the highway head on (the other guy was going 100, and lost control, and moved into his lane). I seen him the next day - his nose was red, since the bag burned him. whop dee shit - you couldn't even tell he was in an accident. I guess he had a line from the seatbelt on his chest, but i didnt see since it was under his shirt. air bags are amazing - he'd have been dead for sure (well, almost for sure) even with a seat belt.

Hot Tropical Babes 04-09-2002 08:49 PM

Air Bags are nice to have, but I have a three year old daughter and I wil never let her ride in the front because of things I have heard, They have killed children, I heard of an eight year old little girl that was killed when her mini van was hit while only doing 25mph. so anyone under 12 goes in the back seat of my durango. Also, I am in a fight with dodge due to the fact the seat belts come unhooked if you barely touch the release lever, The lever sticks way up. One day my daughter released her belt that was holding her car seat in, simply by putting down the arm rest in the middle of the seat.
I guess my point is that yeah air bags are nice, but not for children.
That is my :2 cents:

:1orglaugh Hot Tropical Babes Go Girl .. love your work!!

100% in favour of seatbelts!!

Hot Tropical Babes 04-09-2002 09:08 PM

Thank you Girl Friend,
I have to tell you, I seen a mini van with three children and two adults roll three times doing 80, they passed me right before the crash, on the turnpike going to okla city. I seen it and was the first one on the scene, Girl, i thought i was going to passout as I heard the screams coming from the upside down van. When I approced it, I saw three little girls hanging upside down,, from their seat belts,, Not a scratch on them. They were so scared. I climbed in and released them in fear of a fire that may start. But after it was over I sat and cried for about an hour and thanked GOD they were safe and had been wearing thier seatbelts.
HoneyBlond, I got to hand it to you and others in the field, it takes a very special person to do that job.:thumbsup

Sjayne 04-09-2002 09:33 PM

A reason to wear a seatbelt if you are in the back seat is that if the car you are in is rearended you become a weapon.

If you are thrown forward with the force of the accident and hit the seat infront of you the impact can kill the person in that seat.

I dunno know about you but for me the only thing worse than dying in an accident would be living and knowing I killed a family member or a friend because I didn't wear a belt.

4Pics 04-09-2002 09:48 PM

Guess I am the only one, but both my brother (2-3times) and sister were in accidents that if they had worn their seat belts both would have been killed.

My brother doesn't wear a belt to this day and gets a nice
ticket once every year or so, sister wears one now though.

tekart 04-09-2002 10:04 PM

I always were one and since last year, I've been making all 'front seat passengers' wear one as well...why you ask?

I got tired of replacing the front windshield every few months! :)

but on another topic similiar to this...if you guys & gals all wear seatbelts while driving, how many wear "HELMENTS" when riding on motorcycles?

Tek

theWatsonian 04-09-2002 10:12 PM

Helmets should be mandatory in cars.
:winkwink:

More people die of head and neck injuries in motorcar crashes than in motorcycle crashes - ever wonder why ALL motorcar racers wear helmets?

I meant optional as in you can undo the belt. Its the law here as well.

Fletch XXX 04-10-2002 10:21 PM

Me and my girl wear ours daily.

People think if youre just going to the store or something ya dont need to, but I read somewhere that most accidents happen like 5 miles from where a person lives, could be wrong though.

Its a good habit to get into, I dont even think about it anylonger, just happens.
