Ever known anyone that was in a cult?

I'm reading a book about sub-cultures and it is talking about cults at the moment. Beyond general Christianity (which has its cultish elements) I don't think I have ever knowingly known anyone that was a cult memeber. Have you?

The book I am reading is currently dealing with the surviving members of the Heaven's Gate cult.

JuiceMonkey 01-08-2006 05:50 AM

I tried to start one once...
you'd be suprised how hard it is to get people to do a mass suicide... selfish pricks

Lee 01-08-2006 05:51 AM

Yeah I did, the poor guy was convinced he was on his way to hell for leaving the cult. I have always held the belief that these cults are set up so that the cult leader can get as much pussy as possible, and when I asked him about dating etc needless to say the cult leader picked who went out with who and invariably got the best looking girls LOL.

Fucking scammers getting as much fanny as possible "in the name of the lord" whilst all the other weak minded fools have the fear of God put into them.

On a footnote to this, if I ever found out one of my kids got involved in one I would have no problem making the cult leader "disappear", and thats about the only type of person I can honestly say that about.

I know some scientologists, they make me chuckle

Paul Waters 01-08-2006 08:00 AM

Some of my family are JW's.

candyflip 01-08-2006 08:06 AM

My parents have been part of Amway for over 25 years. Does that count?

They're more like cult leaders at this point. :1orglaugh

crockett 01-08-2006 08:12 AM

I once went to church if that counts..

escorpio 01-08-2006 08:13 AM

I've known some hardcore Deadheads.
They can be as bad as cult members.
Maybe even worse.

xclusive 01-08-2006 08:29 AM

nope and I hope I never do

jscott 01-08-2006 08:33 AM

my aunt & uncle & their kids all started going to a church in some peoples house, was really cult-like, they said anyone who is not part of that religion is going to hell and they shouldnt converse, love, socialize or have anything to do with them (which is the rest of our family) so they became VERY distant from us, until my aunt ended up getting checking into a mental institution

true story

I was heavily courted by someone trying to get me to join Amway when I was 18. They took me to a meeting and about half the people there were people that went to my parent's church. It dawned on me that the same people that buy into a religion without question were a prime target for Amway.

WhoGivesaShit 01-08-2006 09:33 AM

is GFY a cult?
seems like it sometimes.

eroswebmaster 01-08-2006 10:54 AM

Yes my cousin joined "The Way," back in the early/mid 80's

rip raster 01-08-2006 11:02 AM

organized religion = cult

Rebel D 01-08-2006 11:20 AM

I Actually Worked for a cult When i was cheffing. they owned this awesome looking inn in central Ontario but after i got there things got Uber creepy. We had a Mild Ontario Celeb to the Inn to Interview the Owner. The owner walks in while i am cooking Lunch and his little croney is scampering behind him Saying" No No you are the Real celbrity not Her. If that wasn;t Strange enough he used to hold these Seminars on how to be better. Myself being a person who likes to debate asked if there was discussion on thoughts about his class. I was told." Ohh no there is no discussion he only tells the truth." Needless to say that was wacky.
I only worked there for 8 months until they couldn;t afford to pay me. I could tell other stories for days but there were 8 of them and this "Leader" all living in a 3 bedroom house with not a dime to their name other then this little Inn.
And People think i am strange hehe

yes. Oddly, at the time they hit the news I had a friend (well, still do) whose real name is Rael. It was entertaining just to make fun of him.

Rael is established here in my province. What a fucking tard. At least this makes the economy roll ! lol

My uncle and cousins are in a commnuity ... with very strong religious beleifs. Like my couz got married and never had sex b4 marriage .
Everybody give away 10 % of their icome and it is re-distributed toward the people in the need (like my uncle ... he broke his neck and is in a wheelchair stuck with 4 kids and the wifey).
The way they rationalise god is very interesting thought ...

Nismo 01-08-2006 12:25 PM

Back in the mid 90's my aunt, uncle and 2 cousins were members of this cult like church. They said anyone who didnt believe in what they did were going to hell and if you believed in anything besides what they believed in you were wrong. They went to church like 5 days a week and blew off their kids baseball games to go. They were all brainwashed. I remember my cousins telling me how rich their pastor was one time and how he buys a new mercedes and new lexus every year. Then there was a big scandal in the news regarding the leader of the church and money laundering. Aparently the guy had a multimillion dollar mansion, all kinds of cars, boats, jewelry, etc. and used the church the funnel money or some shit. Right after that I remember them stop going to church and they will never talk about that shit. Was very weird times. I think they were called "christians".

tristan_D 01-08-2006 05:44 PM

I have called my dad Mr. Applewhite on occasion. He doesn't mind.

He's one of the ones actually cashing big checks each month.

He used to do all the meetings and would travel to speak. These days, he doesn't do much at all. Just cashing the checks because their network has grown so much in the past 25 years.

The first time I realized it had a "cultlike" vibe was when I attended a function in Atlanta and the group they belong too filled the entire George Dome. 80,000 plus people. It was like a giant church service.

I have an ex-girlfriend who grew up in a cult compound out in the midwest until she was 8. Her Mother snuck out in the middle of the night with her and her 8 brothers and sisters, literally ducking armed guards and running through the woods for miles until they found a road and hitched the whole crew of them back to Georgia.

She'd hooked up with some guy, they got married and he took her there. He kept her pregnant through all 9 kids (back to back) as birth control was considered sinful. She couldn't run pregnant and started stuffing cotton up her cooch to stay not pregnant long enough to gather the kids and run. They told some horrible stories about the treatment there for the women and kids.

Really, really crazy shit.
