Saltwater Aquariums.
Anyone here have any?
About to buy one, wanna get somethin atleast 150gal... Any suggestions on the equip/tank I should get? Figure I need a wetdry, return pump... gonna wait on the protein skimmer etc. |
i used to have a big-ass one.. it's sitting out in the shed.. gotta set it up again.. it's a bit sterile in the office..
i used to catch my own fish with a drop net while snorkelling when i was younger.. triggerfish, butterfly fish.. everything.. not sure whether i could bring myself to take them out of their natural environment nowadays though.. they are threatened enough with sewage outfalls and whatnot.. still.. theres no difference between that and buying them in the shops so..... eh.. |
A friend of mine had a Saltwater Aquarium some time back. He had a eal, shrimp and a small shark in it. Cool shit !
|
Ya, I've always wanted one... figure I'll throw down a couple grand on a big one, and enjoy it...
Boyhood dream of being a marine biologist or somethin |
actually now i think about it i should probably get back into it.. snorkelling along the coast was absolutely gorgeous..
|
get my slowly growing ass out into the sun :)

|
you can go two ways with salt water tanks -
tiny nice little semi-peaceful pussy ass fish, with some living coral, invertabrates and nice shit like that or big ass mofo's who eat live food I prefer the big hungry fuckers, much more fun 1-2 panther groupers would work well in a 150gal, they are white with black spots, and a smallish head. Trigger fish would also be fun, and they come in a wide variety of colorful sub-species I also like lion fish, but you have to watch your ass when you clean the tank - they have poisonous spines, and they are deceptivly quick, and aggressive enough to charge your arm. I found keeping salt water fish easier than keeping many delicate fresh water species. I would suggest you do invest in a good UV sterilizer, as well as the best filtration system you can fit/afford. And if you go for the living coral, be prepared to spend on some fancy lighting to keep them healthy. |
also, be careful when purchasing grouper
Some asshole sold me a fucking bumble bee grouper a few years back. It ate EVERYTHING in my tank except the panther grouper, and I had to get rid of the thing in like 4 weeks. You see, that is the big ass fucker that attacks divers working around oil rigs, and they keep them in the shark exhibits in sea world, too. They get fucking huge, and they eat anything they can jam in their mouth. |
Lol, ya... thats the name of that grouper, was tellin my GF about it the other day.
Lost my ICQ list, just added ya again... haven't talked in a while bud, did ya ever move? |
Do you want to do fish only or reef? Fish only requires a lot of filtration especially if they are live feeders. You will also be cleaning/syphoning/scraping every couple of days just to maintain a clean look. I'd recommend a reef tank.... start with 1/2 live rock....1/2 honeycomb or grotto rock. For a reef you need some killer metal halide lamps, lots of powerheads for circulation on a wave maker, and heaters/chillers depending on where your at. Use a plenum on the bottom (google search for directions) for reef or fish only. aaah fuck it just icq me if you wanna chat......

hey, a bunch of jellyfish with an UV light would look fucking cool.. theres a bar in japan that's got an enormous tank facing the street that does just that..

I have a tropical tank. Lake Malawi African Cichlids and Discus' The Electric Yellows breed like fuckin' rabbits. And i just got my hands on a bunh of Lithibates. Best thing is, i've only paid for 2 of the fish in my tank. I got given anotehr 5, and they bred into 30 :D |
I have a 140 gallon salt aqaurium. Did my years of dealing with it all myself. Now I have a service come in twice a month. They deal with the water changes, supply me with the fish I want. The fish even have a 6 month guarantee.

Thanks hon! =) Awesome link...
Gonna name a fish after ya, I'll give ya the choice which one after I get the tank set up, hehe. |
i use to have a 120 - 150 gallon take.
it ran me about $6k for everything, protein skimmer, live rocks imported from fiji. i had the whole setup. its not worth it really though, the stupid fish are expensive, they die, you gotta maintain it. i bought this $300 - $400 fish called a lion fish. it was a deadly fish, u touch it and yer fucked, pretty neat, but it died :P had an eel too... |
i had a python too
but it got loose and i never found it... |
I 've been to MARINELAND when I was young ... :thumbsup
|
I bet Hungry, heh...
We have a couple of nice aquarium's down here... I just love the damned things, I want a wall of them some day in my perfect house.... And I'll invite ya to come down and go fushin hungry, lol. |

Before you get excited about a ton of new fish to your aquarium, you have to cycle it for 6 weeks. You can actually buy something called cycle that you can dump into it.
I don't have a saltwater aquarium but I have Koi and Goldfish. Anyways, you have to cycle your tank when it brand new. (saltwater or freshwater) |
yeah... I do... I call it The Pacific Ocean.
