Million Dollar Homepage - AGAIN

Fuck, current bid now at $ 152.000.00, this kid is going to be rolling in it.

http://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI...tem=5652179487

Nookster 01-05-2006 10:20 PM

He already is "rolling in it". heh...wish I would have thought of that. (Who doesn't?)

I know, but to make $ 152.000.00 on 1000 pixels is fucking great.

My money is on that somebody like Google will hire him for something.

SomeCreep 01-05-2006 10:22 PM

If that is a serious bid, then the person bidding is either mildly retarded or does not care about ROI.

Nope not at all. They are hoping for good media coverage. Same deal as the companies that buy grilled cheese sandwiches shaped like the virgin Mary. :winkwink:

$5 submissions 01-05-2006 10:32 PM

The genius lies both in the concept and knowing how to HYPE his concept. That guy is going places.

dij 01-05-2006 10:51 PM

wasn't it like 30-40k this morning.. krazy shit

Brother Bareback 01-05-2006 10:53 PM

Ya it was. I checked this morning at 3AM(PST) and it was at 33k :2 cents:

Paraskass 01-05-2006 11:01 PM

I wish I had thought of that fucking stupid idea.

Basically the kid got lucky. His story was picked up and spread around or something.

woj 01-05-2006 11:06 PM

damn, that's crazy...

Exactly what I was thinking...

But I wonder how many of those bids are a fake user.... :helpme

rowan 01-05-2006 11:13 PM

So he's made $990k already (assuming they were all actual sales and not his own affiliate links) and now he's ending with a bang at $150k+ more... very nice

BIGTYMER 01-05-2006 11:16 PM

Crazy...

Brother Bareback 01-05-2006 11:18 PM

check out the page views on that auction

292.093

kektex 01-05-2006 11:19 PM

Well this kid certainly struck gold, but the person that is bidding that much for those last pixels is very dumb.Once the last pixels are sold , the hype will die and that will be the end of those $150K

shahab6 01-05-2006 11:39 PM

Why would someone pay that much?
Its not even targeted traffic, and 10 months from now, no body is even going to go to that website. They could spend that money on a better advertisement.

Rice_Master 01-06-2006 01:35 AM

I check the bid this morning and it was at $600,000

Now it's down to $150,000?

something is fishy.

Manowar 01-06-2006 01:39 AM

1 user took it from 30k to 130k

wtf

It's making Internet history. It will be listed through the Alexa network and many others soon. :2 cents:

BlueDesignStudios 01-06-2006 01:54 AM

the only ppl who made money was the kid, and perhaps some of the first ppl who bought pixels.. to pay that much for the last ones is stupid

that spot is so fucking small, unbelievable if he was smart he would have reserved a nice big chunk in the middle or something for this last auction.

exactly..

Quagmire 01-06-2006 07:44 AM

I wonder how much the squatters on the reserved spots that are blank are thinking they will get for their spaces.

Brujah 01-06-2006 08:16 AM

On Alexa in Related Links.. I found this.

The kid made his own damn luck.

P.S. The replies in this thread show just how stupid the average person is. You guys don't know your ass from a hole in the ground and are critiquing a guy that made over a million dollars in a few months for nothing and those that can afford $150,000 for an ad spot. Open your eyes, wipe the shit out of them, and slap yourselves in the face for being completely stupid and having absolutely 0 sense common or otherwise. :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

The kid is filling the pixels with his own affiliate codes - basically building his own hype to make it look like he's making a killing - which alot of you are buying into.

You guys wait right here... I'm gonna go get a turnip truck and come back here and sell some nice and juicy turnips to ya'!

He gave me 16 free pixels. I don't hate him too much.

Yes, hes not very smart :upsidedow

Drake 01-06-2006 10:38 AM

He'll parlay this into bigger things - either starting new projects or getting hired at some prestigious company.

Like 5submisisons said, the genius was in the unique concept and the ability to hype it. I'm still not sure how he did the latter. If he had come to GFY two years ago saying he was going to start a webpage and charge people $1 per pixel on a site that has no traffic, everybody would have laughed at him. But the concept was cute and original, and goal oriented (the benchmark of reaching $1million, pay his way thru school with his novelty, could he do it?) that people could actively participate in by buying spots or by watching the progress on his site of how many ads have been sold. His story must have got picked up by some media sources, by his own effort, by world of mouth, or by luck and caught on life wildfire. Good stuff.

geez, some people on this board

I'm sure CNN, BBC, Reuters were all fooled too because it's just that easy to fool them

~Ray 01-06-2006 10:44 AM

that's my website.. I made $42.83 with commission junction and am still waiting on my other check from a company called: Ibill , then I'll be rollin'.

It's not just about coming up w/ the idea, it's about getting the word out.

pornguy 01-06-2006 01:53 PM

I dont think that the kid is a marketing wiz or anything. I think that he got very lucky.

pornguy 01-06-2006 01:53 PM

Wonder what he has done with all the money. Think he will have anything to show for it in a year?

I would think he is going to be smart with it ,

warlock5 01-06-2006 02:42 PM

I'm betting that the winner will either be a) fake or b) an online casino that will earn back more than their investment from all the media mentions when the auction is over and this kids all over the news.

I don't think all the existing space was "Sold".
I would guess most of the first 250,000 pixels or so were given away or
sold dirt cheap to make it look like he was raking in $ off it.

Like has been said before, the idea of a banner farm isn't all that amazing...
It's getting buyers to think a brand new website was a place to drop
hundreds of dollars on an ad... that was his achievement.

Chances are he has no other ideas, so outside of him leveraging his $
or fame... This is the last you'll hear from him.

sickkittens 01-06-2006 03:12 PM

So the pixels aren't just good for one year?

BlueDesignStudios 01-06-2006 03:17 PM

ok here's a question

some say it was a great idea, others say he got lucky.. what would you put it down to?

I'd say that it was a great idea, 20%, but got lucky, 80%.. if he never got shown on the tv networks I doubt his site would have taken off

Word of mouth helps alot. That's the luck part. Coming up w/ it before anyone else is the good idea part.

Please tell me you're not one of "those people" that believes everything the media tells you and considers any information from them "gospel"?

I'm pretty sure they all were duped by the RunAway bride.. maybe I'm wrong, but I seem to recall a few stories about her abduction and a search for the people who took her...

Go back to lurking until you wisen up.
