Google to build computers

Google to launch Linux-based PC

05/01/2006

Internet search leader Google is to announce the launch of its own budget priced personal computer that will run on a Linux-based operating system and could be sold in conjunction with Wal-Mart, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The machine, dubbed Google Cube, could present a serious challenge to software giant Microsoft whose Windows operating system currently runs some 90% of the world's personal computers.

Though previous attempts to launch cheap network-based computers have failed, analysts believe that Google's stellar brand, plus its deep pockets and expertise at building web applications, could give it a chance against the world's biggest software company.

The report said the new computer could be announced as early as Friday when Google co-founder Larry Page is due to address the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Will be hard to convert most people over from windows. I predict it will be as popular as the macintosh, which is better than most windows computers already.

MrJackMeHoff 01-05-2006 12:59 PM

who the fuck wants a linux pc? I mean windows sucks and all but its all there is and everything works on it.

Actually, it could even be as little as only one of these:
Google / Cheap = Itwillsell.
Google / Better = Itwillsell.

Bring in both and Microsoft is in for a treat.

kektex 01-05-2006 01:14 PM

This is just a false rumour. They have already denied this.

NoWhErE 01-05-2006 01:26 PM

People are afraid of change though... I dunno if they will be willing to switch from their user friendly, trusted and well known Windows to Linux so easily...

polle54 01-05-2006 01:33 PM

If they build a pre-configured PC with all the basic tools a normal surfer need, this could sell.

penzo 01-05-2006 01:56 PM

Forgetting all other reasons... was it an inspiring day in the marketing dept when they dreamed up the name "Lindows"?? :1orglaugh So damned cringy! :winkwink:

kane 01-05-2006 04:21 PM

it will all depend on exactly what this PC will do. If it's $200 and all it will do is surf the internet and play movies and games it will fail.

Remeber PeoplePC and didn't AOL try this before, Hell even Microsoft tried this with web TV. It's been tried in the past and failed in the past. Dell has a computer right now for $300 and it will do all this plus run games and other programs so I can't see how the google computer can compete.

Now I say this with some hesitation because of two things: 1.Google seems to have the midas touch and everything they try works out. and 2. we have yet to actually see exactly what this computer can do and how much it will cost.

But let us not forget something Bill Gates himself said, "Success Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose." Google may just find out how true this is.

pornguy 01-05-2006 04:26 PM

I had heard that google will make an OS. but not an actual PC.

It does kind of piss me off, that you dont have a choice of OS unless it is a microsoft choice.

Lindows is now called Linspire. I haven't tried many versions of Linux, but its my favorite of what I have tried.
