Can someone explain to me what is Bluetooth tech.

I'm hearing about this thing every where.
Maybe I missed the boat. But I have no clue what it is.
Can someone tell me?

I have bleutooth on my laptop , but I too have no idea what it is good for !

Tom_PM 01-05-2006 10:14 AM

In a nutshell, it's a long range, high speed/quality wireless technology.

Babagirls 01-05-2006 10:58 AM

tom is right

most popular right now is the Bluetooth Wireless Headset (for cell phones).

it's not really long range...maybe compared to infra-red

but overall for cell phone headsets it's only good for a radius about 10-15 meters

pornguy 01-05-2006 11:03 AM

It is from not brushing well.

Actually it is technology that has been developing for more than 5 years, and at a rather slow pace.

Bluetooth headset + laptop + skype is da bomb! :thumbsup
You can buy usb bluetooth adapters for 10 bucks.

Tom_PM 01-05-2006 11:21 AM

Thats true, "long range" compared to typical non-bluetooth :)

Less wires is a good thing!

bluetooth means that 2 devices having bluetooth can interact wireless, on the frequancy of 2.4 GHz. For example, you have a notebook/laptop with bluetooth and a printer with bluetooth, you activate them, and you can print something without having to put a USB cable from the laptop to the printer. The same goes for PDAs (Palm, etc.), cell phones, mouse, keyboard, etc. If you don't have a device with bluetooth, you can buy a bluetooth adapter (USB), and that device becomes one with bluetooth.
For example, if you are in car with a laptop, cell phone and a Palm, all with bluetooth, you don't need wires between them, they interact among them with the help of this bluetooth cip they have, on the radio frequency of 2.4 GHz.
Detailed enough? :)

hehe that is insane... can't believe you are in a computer based biz and don't know what bluetooth is :)

it's a wireless connection option mostly used on laptops and cell phones. I used it to set my mobile up as a remote for my computer. just for the fun of it.

Is it possible to extend the range to something more useful?

biftek 01-05-2006 04:37 PM

it is possible by using external antennas , while i haven't seen any bluetooth gadgets with external antenna jacks , you can do a home brew job by using induction , get some copper wire wrap a few turns around the blue tooth gadget , hook the copper wire to the coax running to the antenna

bringer 01-05-2006 04:40 PM

bluetooth is awesome for wireless internet via laptop+cellphone with unlimited net access

biftek 01-05-2006 04:43 PM

also if you are handy with a soldering iron , you can crack open the blue tooth gadget and solder in a external antenna jack , seeing as the gadget as a built in atenna its just a matter of finding the connections , soldering the jack in , making a mounting hole in the case , then with a mesh dish ( same one as used for wireless lan ) you can get some good distance

me personally i don't use blue tooth , it can be exploited seeing as blue tooth is based on tcp/ip , it makes sense that ports are open so that programs can work , making your phone/pc/printer/whatever vulnerable to attacks , not to mention that there is also a few virii floating around

buddyjuf 01-06-2006 12:39 AM

Bluetooth creates a network between 2 or more devices. It uses radio waves to do so.

Its also omnidirectional, unlike the IR where you need to position both directy.
