When will 1024x768+ be standard

No computers sold in the last couple years come at 800x600, All LCD's are pretty much 1280x1024. According to my stats less then 20% of people use 800x600 settings anymore.

When do you think 800x600 will be a thing of the past?

I think its pretty close, I would rather have tours in 1024x768

My bet is simple.

800X600 is already a thing of the past.

I build alot now for 1024w, but tend to stick to 780w or so for tours still.

woops lol meant to say 1280x1024

Even though monitors etc. can go to greater than 1024x768 resolution, people don't necessarily fill that space with their browser window... I've run tests that still indicate keeping your important attention grabbing stuff within that 800x600 window as being important to productivity etc.

Frankly, if designers are allowed to start filling 1024x768+, we're going to see even more of a reduction in conversions as the tours will take longer to load. I haven't seen recent stats, but even though 20% may be at > 800x600 resolution, 40% or so are STILL on dial-up. I really don't understand the mentality. We're here to make money, not pretty sites.

1024x768 rocks my world !

I dont see where going wider is making it more pretty, it's just having more real estate to work with.

The point is that you will fill that space with more graphics that slows the load.. You're making an ad.. not art.. If you can't sell the site in 800x600 then you shouldn't be designing it in the first place. Designers want to make things all "pretty".. they want more color depth.. they want flash.. they want a bigger page... I used to manage teams of 10+ graphics artists... *chuckle*.. you guys would bring the hardware to a crawl if you had your way and then complain that it was the programmers fault for not writing more efficient code.. :1orglaugh

My sites are mostly 1024x768. 800x600 surfers can scroll :-)

mardigras 01-04-2006 02:44 AM

One thing to keep in mind is that not all video cards function the same. a page at 800X600 on my laptop looks quite different than the same page at 800X600 on my desktop.

I'm using my laptop most at the moment for page work and it's resolution is 1280X800 (widescreen). I'd be willing to bet that someone with a different brand of computer set at 1280X800 would be seeing the page we are currently on at least slightly differently than I am seeing it now. There's too many variences, so that's why I would never take the attitude to design solely for the highest percentage from my stats.

I tweak my pages so they look OK at 1024X800 & 800X600 on both the laptop and PC, with medium-larger browser text sizes and anyone who insists on using outside those ranges can either scroll or squint :1orglaugh

What I have noticed...

800x600 was gone back in 2004...

If I create an MGP and make it for people with 800x600 the productivey is VERY LOW... If I make it for high end people, it is VERY HIGH...

If I create a free site and make it 800x600 the sales from it are low.. If I make it for the high end people, it is very high...

800x600 has been a thing of the past as far as I am concerned...

Also fuck modems... The only numbnuts using them are in countries that don't buy porn...

When I make shit for cable/DSL users shit sells like hotcakes... When I do it for modem users, it sells like yesterdays news...
