Tempest 01-04-2006 12:53 AM

That's the problem with this up to the minute reporting... Ends up putting out a shitload of misinformation..

abadfish 01-04-2006 12:55 AM

What the fuck... How do you go from having one miner die to having only one miner live in a few hours???

CNN's website was even saying the men were being brought to local hospitals, etc etc.

boneprone 01-04-2006 12:56 AM

That is horrible..

While Anderson Cooper was talking one of the family members they had been talking to earlier ran up to him and told him. She said that fights broke out inside the church when they were told they had been mistakenly informed the miners were alive. :helpme

And the media wants to accuse the government of being clueless liars?

It's not like dead and alive are nuanced technical jargon. :321GFY

The media is not to blame here. The person who said they are dead is the same spokesman for the mine who earlier said they were alive, according to the family member that let Anderson Cooper know what had just happened.

Dunno, The Chicago City News Bureau which closed up shop on New Years eve 2005 had this maxim they told all their up-and-coming journalists working there....

"If your mother says she loves you, check it out"

I'm disappointed that no-one producer/journalist of ANY network was willing to double check all of this before going to air with it, in CNN's defence, I get my breaking news alerts on my Blackberry, and while there were reports from the mine all day, when the first mail I recieved from a friend that the miners were all ok, there was nothing from CNN until the report came in that it was only the one miner found alive. :(

Red Ezra 01-04-2006 07:29 AM

pretty sad - I cant even imagine what those people must be going through - how horrible - this is just the worst thing that could ever happen - I feel so bad for them - I cant even watch the news it's too heavy - everybody crying it's just tragic after celebration

JamesK2 01-04-2006 07:40 AM

"Miscommunication" blamed for early reports

That's fucked.

Should reporters become coroners and insist on examining bodies? There was a 3 hour gap between the "miscommunication" and the correction (which happened over midnight so there are a ton of newspapers with "12 alive" on the front page).

shuttup moron. Was there an "official announcement" that the miners were found alive? NO. The media based their "facts" on rumors spread by the family. Did the media care to double check the rumors? Of course not. It's amusing how the media is totally wrong in this instance, and when they start backtracking, you fucking believe into their excuses as well. Damn sheep.

Sarah_Jayne 01-04-2006 08:26 AM

my family is a mining family (ie own and ran a coal mine for generations) and all I can think about is the families right now

Media is scum, but I dont think they can be blamed in this case. This was good news that was rushed this time, usually its the opposite.

Quote:

But late Tuesday night, families began streaming out of the church, yelling "They're alive!" The church's bells began ringing and families embraced, as politicians proclaimed word of the apparent rescue a miracle.

As an ambulance drove away from the mine carrying what families believed was the first survivor, they applauded, not yet knowing there were no others.

Though the governor announced that there were 12 survivors, he later indicated he was uncertain about the news. As word buzzed through the church of survivors, he tried to find out what was going on, he said.

"All of a sudden we heard the families in a euphoric state, and all the shouting and screaming and joyfulness, and I asked my detachments, I said, 'Do you know what's happening?' Because we were wired in and we didn't know," Manchin said.

International Coal Group Chief Executive Officer Ben Hatfield blamed the wrong information on a "miscommunication." The news spread after people overheard cell phone calls, he said. In reality, rescuers had only confirmed finding 12 miners and were checking their vital signs. At least two family members in the church said they received cell phone calls from a mine foreman.

"That information spread like wildfire, because it had come from the command center," he said.
Company officials waited to correct the information until they knew more about the rescue, Hatfield said.

"Let's put this in perspective. Who do I tell not to celebrate? I didn't know if there were 12 or one (who were alive)," Hatfield said.

Yes..just relying on statements makes you a puppet. It is the same rush for the story that got the first Bush election wrong and nothing has been learned since.

How many times do you hear CNN or Fox say 'these are uncomfirmed reports'. THEN they shouldn't be airing them.

How much of the live coverage did you watch? They even had the fucking governor of the state celebrating and telling people they would be reunited with their family members soon. After the mine officials had a press conference to say they weren't responsible for the "miscommunication" many family members stormed out of the church and said they were lying. I tend to belive them over officials or reporters.

Those 2 sentences explain exactly why this happened. Not the media's mistake at all.
