Anyone here VEGAN?

Did you switch to that diet from vegetarianism or straight from a meat-eating diet? Was it gradual or 'cold turkey'(pun intended) so to speak?

wedouglas 12-31-2005 03:28 PM

Vegans are retarded. They are unhealthy and usually have to take supplements.

Which vitamins are unavailable due to a vegan diet?

Maybe not retarded, but it is a royal PITA to host/feed them. My cousin, who is my age, was home for Christmas and she's vegan. I can't tell you the amount of time, discussion, and planning that my grandmother, mom, aunt and I go through to make sure there is something good/appropriate for her to eat. It annoyed me much more this year than it has in the past, for some reason.

That's when you serve what you're serving...

Don't like it - don't eat.

How did the menu end up looking? I was recently at a place in Greenhills (suburb of Manila, Philippines) that had dishes that tasted exactly like meat. I was surprised to learn that it was TVP/glutein with no MSG. Amazing stuff.

Unfortunately, I'm southern so it doesn't work like that. Everyone has to be fed and happy and there has to be 10 times more food than will ever be eaten.

maybe unhealthy is incorrect, but you need to make sure you get all the vitamins that your body needs. Require strict dieting. You'd have to search the web for exact vitamins.

I'm a vegetarian. When I go to relatives or friends, I usually don't eat because I know the hassle it is.

Forget about going out to eat.

I can just imagine what it must be like for a vegan.

I can't stand when people say that because most "non veg's" eat poorly as well...I would even go out and say that the % is alot higher of unhealthy non-veggies vs. veggies.

Vegan isnt just non-vegetables. They eat NOTHING that comes from an animal. No milk or eggs. Nothing.

No shit, Shirlock.
:winkwink:

I'm just saying that people assume vegetarians and vegans are unhealthy because they're lacking vitamins, when in reality non-vegand and non-vegetarians are probably more unhealthy as a whole.

Translates to lower cholesterol and growth hormones. :2 cents:

It's always great when people respond to guesses with other guesses.

yeah, i agree with that. Most people do eat healthy. I wish I could remove that unhealthy thing from the first post. It doesnt convey what I meant to say and looks stupid.

Most vegan and vegetarian friends of mine actually pay attention to what they eat. Almost every non-veggie that I know doesn't pay attention to what actually goes into their body. (unless they're fitness/health freaks - which is pretty rare) I think that's pretty accurate.

No problem. I just didn't understand the whole "vegans are retarded" remark.

wedouglas 12-31-2005 03:59 PM

All I can say is that meat was a leading cause in the evolution of man. It should be eaten.

We did the usual turkey and a ham, and then we always have lots of fresh vegetables, so it's not too bad. The thing that always screws us up is stuff like putting pork fat in when you're cooking your beans. A lot of the seasoning for vegetables in the South has junk like that, and she won't eat it. We make her a separate small bowl of everything with no meat, animal fat, or dairy and my grandmother makes her a small pan of dressing without any turkey or meat.

We also did Texas caviar, Chinese coleslaw, seven layer salad and a lot of other stuff that passed inspection. We've kind of learned over the years what she will and will not eat. Sometimes I lie to her about desserts and tell her there's no eggs/milk in something, when everyone knows there is. :1orglaugh

I think it is foolish to make living more difficult. Though you may be able to obtain everything through alternate routes, eating meat and dairy is by far easier.

So your group of friends is a representative cross-section of the world's population?

Sweet.

Holly 12-31-2005 04:04 PM

I don't think she's unhealthy (and is probably healthier than me, lol) but she has been trying to have a baby for 6 years and can't get pregnant. She actually started doing fertility treatments this past year and it still hasn't worked.

My grandmother is convinced that the way she eats is the cause, but she doesn't have the balls to say it to her. :1orglaugh Instead, she just frets, worries and shakes her head whenever the subject comes up.

Slightly off topic: does a vegan diet result in weight loss or does the carbs offset the loss of an animal fat-based diet?

Tough to say. There's a wide range of vegan foods out there.

TheJimmy 01-01-2006 12:15 AM

My half sister's mother is a strict vegan... 'nothing with faces, or nothing with a mother'

as for weight loss, she is very lean, but also has great muscle tone...she's also a very skilled and semi well known yoga instructor in the SF Valley...
