Are You Tainted?

Many people believe that if you have travelled or lived overseas, you are tainted with foreign influences and can never be, truely, a native again. This is a particular problem in rural homogeneous societies like Japan, France or Alabama. :)

Knowing that you have seen the way that "others" live, practice their religions, and eat strange foods gives you a different perspective on life that the locals will never have and makes you "suspect."

What are your experiences with being "tainted"?

A good example would be a person who has spent some time in Amsterdam and realizes that erotica and weed will not result in the downfall of society. Try and explain this in the local Church of Christ in Wet Moss, Mississippi.

Well, I can tell you I know a bunch of fucks that aint ever seen the outside of Iowa. Talk about living with blinders on. I'd rather be tainted.

Working with a European company and traveling to Europe has definitely altered my way of thinking, although I wouldn't call it tainted.

America does not know cheese.

And, it's pretty humbling when there are books older than my adopted country.

As I was raised on the east coast, I am familiar with architecture older than a hundred or two hundred years; but, it's pretty cool to see buildings and artifacts that date back a thousand years....

Most definitely changes a person's outlook.

Where exactly is Wet Moss Mississippi :)

I would say I get enlighted more then tainted.

How can you say America does not know cheese.

The majority of current citizens are first/second generation immigrants themselves.

If anything Americans know more cheese then those who have only lived their life in the small European country that the live in.

I was born in Europe. But raised here. I was brought up with both Western Civilization and Eastern Civilization influence.

I've travelled around and spend a considerable amount of time in other places. I have found it hasn't tainted me but rather enhanced my perspective on things.

I was born in Russia and raised on the east coast.

I'm not crazy about cheese, to begin with....but, I hadn't tasted feta until I went to Europe....mozzarella, too, for that matter....

It's different, the cheese in Europe...and, in my opinion, more flavourful....

In Philly, there is a baking company called Amoroso..they make THE best hoagie rolls/steak sandwich rolls, bar none. It has less to do with the recipe than the atmosphere and environment where it's baked....

So, no matter where our immigrants came from, the base ingredients are not the same...different milk, I guess..not being an expert on cheese.

Regardless...my entire view of the world has changed, as my exposure to Europe and Asia expands.

Tainted as seen through the eyes of the locals who have never travelled further than the three surrounding counties.

Babagirls 12-30-2005 01:15 PM

never been outside the usa

Sarah_Jayne 12-30-2005 01:37 PM

well, as an American who has lived in the UK for a decade and became a dual citizen this year you can bet I am tainted. However, I think tainted is a negative slanted word when instead I think the word should be enriched. Having as broad an experience you can in the world can only be a good thing.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 12-30-2005 01:39 PM

the thing about Americans, And I am one by birth, and was brought up in the states, os that we are taught that the United states is the only place to visit, live and work. that it is the only safe place, and that the people in all other countries are dirty, rude, and nasty. It is not taught directly that way, but that is how it ends up.

I live in mexico, and I find it sunny as hell when I tell someone that I went to Walmart or Sams, or costco or homedepot here.

they say they did not know that mexico had stores like that.

Well we do. we even got indoor plubming. ( in most places ) and we gots lectricity!

Nothing wrong with travelling and absorbing other cultures. My wife and I intend to do more of that this coming year.
