itunes won't let you copy from the ipod back to the computer. I know I can just mount the ipod as a drive and copy the files like that, but they're scattered all over the place in different directories and such. Not practical for thousands of songs.

I know there's programs to do this, just wanted to see if anyone has any recommendations.

There's a setting in the preferences to automatically sync your files. Uncheck that setting.

Google EphPod and Anapod Explorer. Those are two freeware programs I beleive that do what you want and allow you to edit the files on there. However, please take note, I have a video Ipod and have had problems with both of these working.. basically... they dont for me. So make sure take note if you have a video ipod.

Regarding wiping your ipod clean when you synch with your computer, I am assuming that your actual music files are not on the computer and just on your ipod. If thats the case, and you have it itunes set to auto-sync with your library, it will remove all songs.

Either way, sometimes its easier just to turn that auto-synch setting off that way you have to manually manipulate adding/removing files off your ipod.

Hope that made sense.

I've done that twice, but when connecting my iPod to a new iTunes install on a new PC. Sucks ass...even if you have it all backed up somewhere else.
