Why should private companies risk huge amounts of money without any guarantee that they will profit from it? You aren't fighting poverty in Africa. Does that mean a solution to poverty in Africa is being delayed by your personal greed?

good point, the african countries have already 'stolen' the aids meds that do exsist claming they shouldn't have to pay and make 'knock offs' in their own country . . . this just in: we are not responsible for aids in africa

I find it funny that we generalize many sociological roles as philanthropic by nature, when they are not.

Maybe an article could be produced as to why Ecomm site owners are not donating enough money and time to research?

They were absolutely right when they threatened to stop acknowledging certain patents. When your life is in the balance, intellectual property means nothing. When millions of lives are in the balance, intellectual property means less than nothing.

if you want to stop aids in africa, why dont you talk to the CATHOLIC CHURCH who have been stopping africans from using condoms over there. this is so irresponsible it is almost criminal. they attempt to stop the distribution of condoms and tell them NOT to use them.

but there is a reason for this right - cos we all know that bit in the bible that says you cant use condoms (commandment 17 i think)... or did jesus say this at some point i just cant remember now.

The Vatican isn't telling people to have unsafe extramarital sex. Someone who listens to the pope, and whose partner does so too, is quite unlikely to catch HIV.

The Vatican isn't helping things by discouraging the use of condoms, but the truth of the matter is that people who have condomless extramarital sex stopped listening to the Vatican the moment they decided to have extramarital sex. It's simply ridiculous to believe that the Vatican is responsible for the way in which people do something the Catholic Church completely forbids them to do in the first place.

Of course, the disinformation spread by the Church about condoms is another matter entirely - the pope should be dragged out of the Vatican and shot for telling people that condoms do not protect against HIV.

i aint a sciencetist , but from my understanding of the gene code , while some of the strings in the genome do mutate from host to host , the base architecture of the strain remains the same , i mean if it mutated so much that it was no longer the same how could one determine if it is the AIDS virus they are dealing with or something totally different

there has to be some base code that links all the strains together which is most likely what they are targeting , the building block/foundation of the virus

from what i remember from an article i read awhile ago , they haven't really found a vaccine to stop infection , but they have found a vaccine to slow the progression of the virus

They completed the first phase of testing, I believe, meaning that the vaccine won't actually infect people with HIV itself. Two more much extensive and time-consuming phases are needed to see if the vaccine will actually work.

Lets start a nonprofit drug company and get tons of donations and grants

the short answer is that MANY cures, treatments, and preventitive measure are stalled or discarded by corporate greed.

AIDS vaccine research has been long plagued with politics and I'm pretty have a feeling that funds are corrupted.
